Human beings are sometimes driven by the desire to exploit others for their personal gains. The aspect particularly takes place in a capitalistic society that thrives on more work and money without considering the welfare of the employees. Workers begin to develop occupational stress in three dimensions: self, work, and life situations. They find it difficult to balance their work and personal life resulting in stress or fatigue. Jordan Ferris in the article titled “Unsafe staffing events and their effect on nursing fatigue and stress levels” explores occupational stress and the implications it has on the employees.
Jordan’s article evaluates the relationship between insecure staffing incidents, the practice of self-care, the nurses’ ability to take rest or meal breaks, and their levels of fatigue. Based on his analysis, unsafe and strenuous staffing events affect the productivity and health of the nurses. The overworked employees experience fatigue leading to job dissatisfaction, burnouts, and staff turnovers. Unsafe and strenuous job activities are considered as the primary challenges in staffing. When the employers push the laborers to work for extra hours their motivation, productivity, and satisfaction levels deteriorate (Ferris, 2016).
Jordan reviews the operations of a large hospital from 2010-2014 to identify changes in the homogeneity of procedures and policies surrounding unsafe working environments, rest, and meal breaks. He groups the events and information into four categories: the situations where the nurses could take rest and meal breaks, the events where they could not consume a meal, incidents where the nurses could not take meal and rest breaks, and the events when they could not take a rest break. The analysis indicated that during unsafe staffing, the nurses were unable to take rest and meal breaks (Ferris, 2016).
The evaluation conducted by Jordan humanizes the aspect of staffing to understand the essential needs of employees. A considerable argument concerning the importance of safe staffing can be seen from the Christian worldview. Religious individuals are said to be quite hardworking even in the secular environment. However, every employee requires a certain amount of time to rest and recover his or her energy for another working day. Capitalists and workaholics defy the scriptures by seeking material wealth instead of seeking the Lord. The Bible does not say that there is anything wrong with money, but it outlines that it is sinful to put money above one’s spiritual needs (Bible Reasons, 2015).
God does not like sharing His time and glory. Overworking the employees is not only sinful but harmful as well owing to the health problems and stress associated with the practice. While laziness is also considered a sin, it is not right to kill oneself or others with excessive work. Christians should not allow the desire and love for money to interfere with their time for the family and their relationship with Christ. According to Proverbs 23: 4-5, people are advised not be weary in search for material wealth. They should terminate their consideration for money because the wealth acts like an eagle. The moment an individual lays eyes on the bird, it ascends into the sky (Bible Reasons, 2015).
Ecclesiastics 3: 12-13 also discusses the need for rest and personal time with family and friends. The verses say that there is nothing sweeter and better than enjoying oneself. The Lord has provided people with the opportunity and gifts of drinking and eating to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Another verse in Mathew indicates the dangers of serving money. Mather 6: 19-21 argues that storing riches for oneself on a planet where rust and moths can destroy and burglars can break in and steal the wealth is not wise (Bible Reasons, 2015). People should focus on storing more treasures in heaven where they cannot be ruined. Conclusively, a staffing professional is entitled to considerable rest to replenish his or her energy.
