Business
The basic fact and the main fact about this case is that the Broken Hill Proprietary
Company Limited (BHP) is causing the environmental pollution from their operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Other important facts are that the BHP is contributing and compensating the effecting parties and contributing in the GDP growth of the PNG. However, the important fact is that the BHP is still working and disposing their wasters under the Interim Tailings License Act which was passed in the year 1984.
The main ethical issue at hand at the moment is that the government of PNG is not reviewing or renewing the Interim Tailings License Act, which is the main reason of the excessive wastages of the company. Moreover, the rules and standards of the current business world are more ethical and environmental friendly as compared to the Interim Tailings License Act passed in the year 1984. Another main ethical issue is that the wastages from the BHP are changing the shape, height and the flow of the rivers which is damaging the fertile land around the river. Furthermore, the number of fish in the river is reduced significantly and it is highly probable that it will create problems in the future. The copper rate in the water is polluting the water and it is not according to the current medical standards.
The main option or solution for the BHP is to allocate funds to clean the environment on the annual basis. The company must start cleaning the environment as per the current standards. It is recommended that the BHP develops or create an artificial lake parallel to the river and dump these wastages at the most favorable location to minimize the environmental damages. Moreover, it will be easy for the BHP to clean these wastages easily without any environmental issues and danger of earthquakes.
