Introduction
The University of Washington has tended to turn into a commercial institution rather than it being an institution that takes heed to improve the status of the institution rather through education. This has been due to the fact that the school has tended to prefer students from outside the state because they pay more in terms of their tuition as compared to the counterparts who are from the state. However, this issue may not be as wrong as it is deemed. This essay will lay down the various factors that seem to support their move and those that may be said to be against their action.
The arguments that are tabled pertaining to the intake of the students has been deemed to be a wrong move by the members of the community and the society at large due to the fact that they have a duty of ensuring that the students from the state have an opportunity to improve their knowledge through providing them with the necessary chances that will enable them to enroll into the school(Lewin). However, the students are denied due to the fact that the amount of tuition fees is way lower than that which will be paid by the out-of-state students.
In addition to this, the institution tends to enroll students from the outside the States and even the international students who have a lower GPA than the students from the schools within the state(Long). This has been met with huge critics from the public due to the institutions are normally meant to enroll students on merit basis and further maintain their educational standards.
These have been seen as moves that have in turn meant that the school is going against its ethical responsibility and hence the move of enrolling the students from outside state rather than on merit basis is a wrong move and should be overturned.
Counterargument
The counter argument that may be meant to tackle these criticisms may be that the school only decided on this move because the government cut its funding for the learning institutions by a staggering percentage hence the learning institutions have tended to receive a lower amount of funding. This, in turn, means that they have to look for other sources of funding for their institutions. Even though the institution has a duty to offer constituents students with a chance to study in their institution, they must have the required funding in order to maintain the school as desired.
In addition to this, the members of the community should have in mind the learning institutions and provide the required support in order for it to be able to maintain its standard and meet the various barriers that it may encounter in its day to day activities. Due to this it is clear that even though the school should be independent, during times of need such as this, where the government has reduced the amount of funds it will receive, the members of the community must try all in their powers to be able to help out the school.
The Response
Even though the matter that led to the university to decide on increasing their funding through tuition, this in my view seems to be the wrong move. This is mainly due to the fact that this is not the only way they can be able to increase their funding. The school can look for donors, hold various meetings where the alumni and other stakeholders will be able to donate to the school and hence will ensure the school does not have to close due to the fact that they lack the required finances to enable it to run effectively.
Conclusion
The University has an ethical duty to ensure the betterment of the society through the improvement of the literacy levels and through the amount of revenue they give to the government(Long).
