My story is based on the life of my 65-year-old neighbor. For two decades we have lived together in the neighborhood. His charming voice and endless jokes kept me close to him. Being a former marine, he would share the different stories of the missions he attended during his at service. After his retirement in the early 1990s, he relocated to Arizona from California. The only strange thing in his life was the loneliness he was comfortable living alone. I assumed this is because of the side effects he encountered as a soldier, therefore, keeping his life personal and protective of others.
His house was made of simple furniture. The foodstuffs in a house were mostly fast foods with drinks occupying the larger parts of the refrigerators. Ideally, the arrangement of the house was old fashion signifying the ancient generation view of life. Most of the time when we were together, could learn a lot from the moral lessons found in his stories as after every narrative he would ask the important lessons that I have acquired in the process of listening. For example, the listening skills were the main expertise I gained from his stories.
His most common combat encounters were during the marine wars. These missions involved the cold war, first and second world wars and even beyond. As a result, the missions trained him to be flexible and therefore becoming use to fitness for periods of time. The most common things that my neighbor holds dearly are his soldier- partners he had during the work duties in the service. The pictures of his dead fellow soldiers reminded him of the importance of friendship and hence undertaking body fitness activities as well as nutritional aspects under check to cool his thoughts on them.
However, the astonishing thing was his body fitness. Despite being a former marine officer, I would have expected h to show many signs of worn out as dictated by his age and the new type of work. On the contrary, he behaved exactly like he is a 20-year-old. His gym contained equipment for body fitness which, my neighbor had a timetable which he used to utilize a specific set of equipment on each specific day. The time taken in the gym shows the high flexibility in his body system as he could perform like a 20-year-old. The press ups and runs could go for an hour of two. This was not an accident as the runs help him maintain the maximum possible body fitness. In particular, he could run for an average of a mile non-stop. These would help enhance his metabolic functions. In addition, lifting and pulling exercises were simple to him as he undertook them.
On the other hand, the neighbor had a baby face which was attributed to the satisfaction in life as well as an absence of stressful activities. Control of this activity encourages adequate management of stress as it is the main factor causing degeneration of cells and thereby keeping a person young for long. His activities impressed me a lot with his physical activity plan standing out of the others. He had a daily routine of a balanced rest time as well as that allocated for physical activity practice. On the contrary, during my young ages, it was difficult for me to manage such a constant exercising schedule. As a result, the situation caught me off guard as his story almost changed my perception of old age. For example, in the modern age society, the elderly people are the grown up people who had little to offer to the community but only wise advice.
His morning runs attempts to provide flexibility for the body in the long term. Elderly people are expected to stay indoors while maintaining minimum levels of runs. On the contrary, my neighbor does the opposite on the daily basis. As result, the runs provided the opportunity to challenge the known notion of runs and the elderly people. This, therefore, broke the mold on the elderly as the absolute theory on the inactivity of old people could not hold for my neighbor. Ideally, his active involvement in the gym and morning runs showed that old age does not limit body fitness in a person.
Furthermore, his activeness made it rarely for him to suffer from any health conditions. An enhanced physical activity increased the efficiency of functioning in his body. As a result, it meant that improved body functioning shows an increased immune system. Furthermore, the rate of cell degeneration with enhanced physical activity falls extending his lifespan. On the other hand, the society was structured in the belief that age comes with disease vulnerability. Therefore, the conflicts within the two different aspects of health status cloud the previous judgment on the elderly. In particular, it breaks the belief I held that disease is not always associated with age as an individual can as well approach old age but with limited instances of illness complications.
