Syria had been in chaos due to the demands of many to overthrow President Bashar Hafez al-Assad which runs an autocratic regime. In addition to this conflict, there are many different demands in Syria that had caused more confusion. Some simply wants a more democratic state and a less corrupted government while some wants an Islamist theocracy to be implemented. These conflicts had likewise cause many of the Syrians to get displaced or forced out of the country (Author 290). This paper will likewise discuss the short-term and long-term consequences of the Syrian displacement.
SHORT TERM EFFECTS
The displacement of Syrians which also include children may make them susceptible to malnutrition and illnesses due to poor sanitation and their harsh environment that they experience during their travels. In addition to this, it is likely that they will take in low-paying or dangerous jobs for the sake of living. Moreover, as parents become more inadequate in supporting their children, they may arrange their daughters’ marriage as early as 13 years old in the hope that they may find a more comfortable life which is not the case (World Vision). Furthermore, children lose the opportunity to attend school and live comfortably.
LONG-TERM EFFECTS
With the Syrian displacement, children who are married will become less educated if they focus on their domestic lives rather than on educating themselves. This may likewise affect their future children. The children who were not able to attend school may also suffer unemployment or enter low-paying jobs when they grow up. Either way, the quality of life is compromised and the rate of poverty will rise. Many of the Syrian refugees will not be able to lead a normal life. They are haunted by the violence that they had experienced which may likewise induce other psychological effects that may be seen in the later years.
CONCLUSION
The conflicts in Syria had divided the country and affected many in negative ways. Children, who have nothing to do with the conflicts, are also severely affected. Maybe it is about time that countries set aside their political or religious crusades and focus on humanitarian efforts while they still can.
