There are two major problems facing the society today. The problems are overpopulation and pollution. Overpopulation is an issue as the increase in population puts a strain on the available natural resources. It also brings about other problems such as habit extinction as humans make room for themselves, religious diversity and species extinction. Pollution is an issue because it contaminates the available resources that are present for human survival. The problem also causes global warming which can bring about natural disasters such as drought and famine (Rata & Runcan, 2014).
Overpopulation has been an issue discussed over the years. The results of those discussions say that there is nothing that can be done to deal with the problem. Others point out nature has a way of controlling overpopulation such as diseases or greed between humans leading to war. However, the medical sector has come up with a better way to deal with it; it is known as family planning by use of contraception.
This solution faces challenges of its own, which is ignorance. The issue is one of the top ten that faces the society. There is the lack of awareness of the method to control overpopulation. The business can assist the community by funding organization that their main aim is to spread awareness of the issue of overpopulation and knowledge of the family planning. So far the method has been implemented in developing countries and has produced some positive result (STAN National Environmental Education Workshop, Okebukola, P., Akpan, B., & Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, 2002). It just shows that the issue can be controlled by our actions if proper knowledge is spread to the people.
The issue of pollution can be addressed by the business leading in an example. It can show that it care for the environment by making sure its production processes is environmental friendly. It can be through recycling or proper disposal of waste materials in ways that do not harm the environment (Tisdell, 2005).
Shareholders believe that a business should strive for the satisfaction of all parties involved as opposed to caring more about making profitability. Most of these shareholders are part of the society; they include the government, employees, consumers, and suppliers. However, most businesses care more about profit, and they strive to undertake action in the name social responsibility when it mostly comes to making more sales. For example a company may give to various public causes only to attract more consumers to their product thus increasing sales or to be in favor of the government by giving money to charity or contribution to the environment (Crowther & Capaldi, 2008).
