1. Why it is reasonable for a survivor of the holocaust to continue believing that God exists
The Holocaust was an atrocious experience to the individuals that went through it. A survivor of the Holocaust must have suffered the pain of losing loved ones and going through pain and torture at the hands of fellow human beings.
However, despite the suffering, it is reasonable in my view for a survivor to continue believing that God exists because of the following reasons:
a) God created the universe, and in creating human beings, He gave them free will with consequences for their actions. Since God did not intend to control human beings directing all their efforts, the survivor will rest assured that despite all the suffering, surviving the holocaust was in self a reason to have faith in God.
b) There is life after death as life on earth is temporary. The Holocaust survivor has a reason to believe in the existence of God for He has promised a better life and future in heaven since the earth is full of suffering. Pain and suffering also are necessary for greater good while a believer is on earth.
c) The happening of the Holocaust was an outcome of evil-minded men who had no sense of dignity on the sanctity of life. It had nothing to do with God’s making, and the survivor will continue believing in the existence of God for there are good things on earth compared to the pain and suffering of the Holocaust.
2. Why it is not reasonable for a survivor of the holocaust to continue believing that God exists.
a) Since God is all powerful, He should have foreseen and prevented the happening of the Holocaust and even protected the helpless individuals from the pain and suffering.
b) Despite the happenings during the Holocaust, God did not answer prayers and even perform miracles to reverse the Holocaust despite being in a position to.
c) God can create the world and make it is free from pain and suffering. A survivor may find it hard to understand why God could allow his people to go through pain and suffering experienced during the Holocaust.
3. Which view among the two is stronger?
The first view that it is reasonable for Holocaust survivor to continue believing in the existence of God is strong. That is because it re-affirms the existence of God through faith and understanding of the nature of God. That time is coming when suffering and death will be no more.
