The articles “Roll Back the Red Carpet for Boys” by Donna Laframboise and “Our daughters, ourselves” by Stevie Cameron talk about gender inequality in the eyes of the public, but the truth is that both boys and girls are victims of discrimination. I support the equality and believe that boys should be treated as well as girls are and that girls should not be over-protected.
There is the emotional appeal in the article “Roll Back the Red Carpet for Boys” because the author, who is a journalist, writes about the difficulties that young boys face during the process of growing up. “Young males are more likely to be physically abused by their parents, to drop out of school, and to face unemployment than their female counterparts. Between the ages of 15 and 24, they take their lives five times as often” (Laframboise 97). While girls are protected, boys are left to themselves to fight their problems on their own which is why they end up troubled and having many emotional and existential problems which they are unable to overcome. There is the emotional appeal in the article “Our daughters, ourselves” because the girls are encouraged to strive for excellence while they end up abused in reality and encounter many difficulties on the path to success. Even though, the girls are encouraged to be equal to men, they soon realize that the reality is different. “They tell us about the sexism they’re discovering in the adult world at university” (Cameron 99). There is much injustice involved in the work place and at universities and this is what girls face in the real world where their parents cannot protect them.
There is strong evidence in both of the articles which helps the authors convey the appeal of evidence. The evidence is statistical, historical, actual and anecdotal. Statistical evidence shows that the majority of boys have bad results at school: “45 per cent of dropouts are young women” (Laframboise 97). Historical evidence lies in the fact that people tend to believe “that the patriarchy has designed the world for the benefit of males” (Laframboise 97). Factual evidence can be seen in the fact that “we tell our bright, shining girls that they can be anything” (Cameron 98). People believe that the girls need to be encouraged because they will see the truth in the real world eventually. Anecdotal evidence are related to the fact that there are “male professors who cannot comprehend women’s stony silence after sexist jokes” (Cameron 99). Both boys and girls have difficulties because of the traditional roles that the society has for men and women.
There are assumptions in these articles which are based on the fact that the dominant culture is sexist and that men always have advantage. That is why they succumb to the pressure which can ruin their lives at one point. On the other hand, girls are encouraged to become whatever they want and to enter the field which is dominated by men. However, in reality, girls also face problems related to the fact that they are female. Occasionally both of the sexes suffer from physical and mental abuse.
Donna Laframboise is a writer and a journalist who investigates her stories and writes informative articles. She is also a photographer and is well informed about all of the topics that she covers. Donna uses many examples to illustrate her points of view in life and on the contemporary social issues. Stevie Cameron is also a writer, author and journalist who performs a great deal investigation. She has won many awards and she supports her claims with evidence.
