Vocation of Business Leader
Vocation of Business Leader.
The paper provides a detailed insight into the Catholic Church’s vision of the modern world economic and entrepreneurial environment, the role of a true business leader, and the connection between Christian values and running a modern business.
There are several important messages in the text. The Catholic Church fully understands the new realities of the twenty-first century such as globalization, development of financial markets, liberalization of the global labor market, new communication technologies and cultural unification. The Church embraces such new reality and has a clear vision on how the new world can be made a better place by applying Christian principles in running a modern business. It is in Church’s best interest to have as many successful businesses as possible because they improve life conditions for everybody.
In fact, the basic principles that can help a business leader to pursue true values are the same as they were many years ago: promotion of human dignity for everybody, regardless of the position, and common good. These principles are the same for every aspect of human life, but when talking about business leaders they gain special importance because such leaders have a responsibility for other people’s life in addition to their own.
The most important lesson of the paper is simple: business life is not a unique realm with its own set of rules. Profit is not a justification for acting selfishly or irresponsibly. Running a good, profitable business can be done in a humane, moral, Christian way, with a common interest in mind. In fact, this is the only right way of running a business. Vocation of a Christian business leader should guide him in this way.
How should the equal and fair distribution of the wealth, created by a good business be achieved? Should it be guided and controlled by law or by the moral principles of the owners and top management?
How should the businesses that clearly harm the environment or produce harmful goods be treated? Should they be outlawed?
