Drones have been highly effective in helping America win wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But, drones also have caused a significant amount of collateral damage as killing a terrorist by a distant strike has also led to the demise of many innocent souls. Having a utilitarian approach has been an important part of American policy, but in the past decade, there have been several morally challenging instances related to drones. Therefore, the past few years have taught us that even though the country still favours the utilitarian approach, there are times when they have shown an increased focus on the greater good.
Morality takes a side step when it is a matter of life and death, and it becomes easier to understand the use of drones to eliminate targets. It does bring into question the challenges of striding away from the moral codes of foreign policy and the traditional utilitarian approach, but it also provides the means to perform a necessary evil. Therefore, drone use has become an essential part of foreign policy and counter terrorism and it is the real moral action as it saves several innocent lives.
In my opinion, in the current world, American foreign policy has shown that working for the common good has overcome their utilitarian approach. America has managed to find excuses for their actions, as their targets are deemed worthy of dying from drone attacks. The changed mindset is likely to remain the same with the challenges presented to maintaining world peace. This dominance of working for the common good makes sense as it is an effective strategy in warfare and counter-terrorism. It is important to understand that national security and world peace are essential aspects of foreign policy and the most suitable policy is using drones for the common good.
