Currently in America, the issue of drug abuse and the gender problem has become an issue causing controversy among many scholars and the community at large. In a way, Applebaum asserts that boy behaviors are too risky and domineering to the girls leading to many girls drug influences at a young age (Applebaum 2004).
On the other hand, the girls also share in the causes of such high prevalence of drug abuse among the youth. From a scholarly point of view, the girl child develops faster than the boys develop, and often have an ability to think and act concretely even before the boy child starts to make concrete images (Applebaum 2004). This means that the girls especially those within the teens always want to try new and crazy things, which make them more susceptible to hang out with “bad” boys. When they do this, Abram asserts that they equally share in the “badness” and contribute directly to the high drug prevalence (Abram 2009).
Ideally, the case of boy-girl domination in drug prevalence in the US cannot be tied to a particular sex as both sexes have a role to play in the development and influence. Therefore, this deconstructs the ideal that the boy plays a critical role in the prevalence of drugs among the youth. However, both are parties in the development and influence of drug use.
