I would comment that the video should be a source of learning and awareness to everyone who is aspiring to get into healthcare and is or is becoming a pharmacist. It will help them to assess any such person who might be a drug diverter, and they can capture them in the act and report them to the concerned authorities. It will be a step forward in preventing people from ruining their lives at the hands of drug addiction.
One critical moment I have observed is when a woman once came to the pharmacy and asked for a couple of medicines at the same time. They were different pain killers, muscle relaxants, and suppressors which she was asking for all at once. The pharmacist looked at her skeptically and asked her whether they were for her. She said they were not for her; rather they were for her mother who was suffering from arthritis. On the other hand, the pharmacist noticed that the prescription was written by a gynecologist. I came to realize that the woman was feeling for what is called a cocktail of drugs, where three or more drugs are taken by users which they name as the Hole Trinity or some other, and take it as the ultimate form of relaxation.
There are possible critical moments like a girl who is probably high on some medication, to enter the pharmacy all flustered and anxious, whose pupils are constricted and she happens to address the names of medicines with street slang. Moreover, she does not have solid reasons for her prescription and is taking multiple medicines at the same time. This is a red flag for drug diversion. Another possible case is the one regarding a group of people coming in and asking for medication at the same time. This looks like a well-planted idea as it calls for lack of suspicion and deceiving the pharmacist into thinking they are just friends of the concerned family. However the amount of opioids needed by a single person can be alarming, the prescription taken by the same doctor is also suspicious and the clinic being far away from the locality also raises doubts. Clustered individuals asking for medicine can mean trouble. Also, the method of payment can reveal any concerns. If paid on health insurance, then the purchase can be considered valid, but if paid by cash, it could mean that the individual is misusing the drug.
Aged individuals can also not be trusted because they think it is easier for people to think they will need the medication as they are old. However, there are times when even their condition cannot justify the excess need of pills and medicine. The pharmacist noticed that the older man was taking the medication for a month’s supply only a week after he had purchased the same quantity a week ago. His excuse is clichéd that he is going away for some time, so he needs the supply. However, the real reason is otherwise.
I agree with the corresponding responsibility doctrine of the video because it is usually the close people related to an individual who is responsible for the addiction. They help the person in obtaining it, which is actually a harmful act. The pharmacist needs to be well-equipped with knowledge and must be keen enough to guess whether the person is a regular user or is a drug diverter.
The video was very useful because it taught the different red flags which help to distinguish and study the signs which indicate drug abuse. Relevant to the field of healthcare, it is necessary to know these red flags so such people can be identified, before their lives are ruined.
The question pertinent to this video could be the addition of how these people were treated after they were discovered to be drug diverters and how the law took the matter into its hands.
