Pharmacist carefulness can help in identifying and saving lives of many prescribed drug abusers. It is important for pharmacists to use commonsense when selling prescribed drugs because general signs like nervousness or a potential drug cocktail are red flags used to identify drug abusers. Pharmacists have corresponding responsibility in regard to prescribed drugs and the government expects them to avoid negligence in carrying out their duties. Thus, pharmacists have legal responsibility just like doctors and other state agencies in stopping abuse of prescribed drugs.
Observed Critical Moment Situation
I have once observed a critical moment situation when I was in attachment. A group of teens probably coming from the same school came with similar prescription. I realized that they were from the same school because they were friendly to each other and were talking about various experiences on difficulties of mathematic lessons. It was surprising that each pupil had a prescription from a different doctor. I served the first three pupils and realized they were potential abusers of prescribed drugs. I then called in the chief pharmacist to handle the situation.
Possible Critical Moment Missed
I have realized that I have been missed several critical moments. However, the most common moment regards old drug abusers. I have never suspected that people above fifty years can engage in drug abuse when they know the risk of abusing the drugs. They know their bodies are getting weak and they may not be able to withstand the negative effect of drug abuse. There is an old man who visited the pharmacy quite often to pick prescribed similar drugs for either his children or grandchildren and I never cared to interview him. However, one day when we were engaging in a normal talk he told me that he was not married. This should have been a critical moment. It should have given me the green light to probe and establish the children and the grandchildren who were taking the drugs. I now suspect that the old man was abusing the prescribed drugs.
Corresponding Responsibility
I agree that pharmacist have a corresponding responsibility as discussed in the video. This responsibility makes pharmacist to be careful in carrying out their duties. In some cases it is very simple for pharmacists to indentify drug abusers. For example, if the pharmacist realizes that the prescription is written in different hand writing and the drugs prescribed don’t seem to match in treating a given disease. In this situation, a pharmacist who goes ahead and issues the prescribed medicine without probing to establish their use is promoting prescribed drug abuse. Every professional across the country has a duty of care when practicing his or her profession. Thus, pharmacists should not be exempted from corresponding responsibility.
Usefulness of the Video
This video is useful to both pharmacists joining the profession as well as experienced pharmacists because it helps to bring out common reflags in abuse of prescribed drugs. It also informs pharmacists their legal obligations in carrying out their duties. The video also encourages pharmacist to save life as one actor says she owes her life to a pharmacists who identified that she was abusing drugs.
Question Pertinent To My Reflection
