Question 1
Deb and Ron act as the main characters in the video ‘Dual-earner Families. The story behind this video revolves around the day to day lives of both Deb and Ron. Both Deb and Ron are engaged in hectic jobs as they try to earn an income with which they hope to use to support themselves and their children.
However, there is a major problem that results from both Deb and Ron’s hardworking and busy lifestyle. Since both of them spend most of their time at their respective jobs, they have been unable to dedicate enough time between each other. This has, therefore, caused some disagreements regarding the responsibilities each one of them is supposed to play as a spouse. Both Deb and Ron have also been unable to dedicate enough time to their children.
In terms of their obligations to each other, both Deb and Ron have been unable to find enough time for each other. As a result of their busy work schedules, they usually come home tired and exhausted. Both spouses are, therefore, unable to find enough time to discuss important marital and family issues. Communication between spouses plays an important role in strengthening marriages. However, since both Deb and Ron arrive home from work feeling exhausted, they are usually in no mood to engage in discussions between each other. Their spousal and companionship bond has, therefore, grown weak.
Both Deb and Ron have also engaged each other in frequent arguments about who is supposed to handle some given family responsibilities. For example, they have found themselves quarrelling about who should dedicate more time to their children, who should be responsible for taking care of their home among other many issues. In most cases, both spouses argue that they are either too busy with their jobs or too tired to handle the responsibilities that arise at home. They have, therefore, often resulted to shifting responsibilities between each other.
Deb and Ron’s children have also become disadvantaged as a result of their parent’s hectic work schedules. The children have often found themselves with no one to give them advice concerning the various challenges they face as they grow up. Deb and Ron have also not have the chance to show attention and affection to their children. Their children are, therefore, distant with them and often experience fear whenever they need to approach their parents for help concerning various issues in their lives. The children have also lacked role model figures in their lives and have, therefore, resulted in emulating the media and the people surrounding them.
In a bid to try and improve the situation at home, Deb and Ron have taken a number of measures with the hope of playing a better responsibility as spouses and parents. For example, they have assigned various duties among themselves to ensure that all the obligations that arise at home are met. They have also tried to adjust their work schedules in an effort to create more time between themselves and their children.
Question 2
Both Deb and Ron need realize that it is of great importance for them to increase the amount of time and attention they give to their children. There are a number of reasons why it is important for children to experience sufficient love and attention from their parents. For example, it is important for parents to give attention their children so that a strong bond is formed between both parties. The existence of a strong bond between parents and their children allows both parties to be able to communicate freely with each other about their feelings. Children who communicate freely with their parents often find it easy to approach their parents for advice or any other form of help whenever they require it. However, in situations where parents are not close to their children, it is often difficult for children to approach their parents for help, therefore, causing children to suffer in silence whenever they experience some form of distress.
It is also important for parents and their children to have a close relationship with each other. The existence of a close relationship between both parties motivates children to follow their parents as role models. There have been numerous cases in the past where children who have been neglected by their parents have ended up making big mistakes that affected the rest of their lives negatively as a result of following the lifestyles of the wrong role models i.e. people with bad character who are around them or various media icons. However, parents who are close with their children often motive them to follow the good example set by their parents and often end up living successful and fulfilled lives.
Question 3
There are a number of measures that both Deb and Ron could make in order to stabilize their family. For example, they could both start by working with schedules or time tables that factor in time for family. Both spouses should ensure that they follow their schedules strictly and obediently hence ensuring that they dedicate adequate time to both their jobs and their family. Both Deb and Ron could also organize some family events e.g. going for a family trip, or holiday or carrying out simple acts such as having specific days for family dinners etc. Both Deb and Ron could also go for dinners or picnics so as to ensure that they strengthen their bond as spouses. The above measures will have a significant positive effect in improving the stability of Deb and Ron’s family Question 1
