Q1
The incidence investigated involved a company employee who was fired for inappropriate behavior on the Facebook platform. The employee of a media company posted a video of himself drunk and acting in an embarrassing way. Together with his friends, he was urinating in public while throwing expletives to onlookers. The video went viral, and the company’s management fired him on receiving notifications of their employee’s behavior. In a factual sense, the incidence could have been avoided.
Although being drunk and stubborn while off duty is not categorically wrong regarding the management, public profanity is a problem. The employee could have behaved better and engaged in more self-control. Under such responsible conditions, a video recorded and uploaded would not have had any ramifications on his employment. Alternatively, he could altogether have avoided and desisted from uploading the incriminating video clip online. The company would not then have been forced to fire him to protect its public image.
Q2
The corporate social media policies have several similarities regarding social media use. One of the most common similarities is the caution against negative company image representation. The other common policy is a use of social media in a way that negatively and directly or indirectly violates company rules and workplace policies. Such include sexual harassment, profanity, explicit material, racism and cyber bullying for an employee under the company’s affiliation. One strong aspect that other firms can adopt is the mature and responsible use of social media for employees. The things that might concern me in the policies might include the affiliations I keep online. Being tagged or linked to an offensive, derogatory or racial post, status or tweet can easily occur to me. I, therefore, ensure that my online profiles are carefully managed to ensure positive and sociable affiliations in my interactions.
Q3
Social media excellence is where social media is used for a good cause and positive outcome. One organization that I found, that used social media excellently was Starbucks. It engaged its online social media clients with an opportunity to criticize and give feedback about the company. Notably, it invited users to engage actively in the #MyStarBucks concept where they voiced what they liked or would like to see in Starbucks and its products. The excellent use of social media showed a responsible and mature company. Clients and users felt part of the company, and experienced respect as their ideas were later incorporated in the company’s rebranding. The company experienced an increased customer and brand loyalty. It also was able to rectify on weak areas and maintain a strong market share hold and presence. Needless to say, revenue returns went up as sales increased greatly in the following period.
Q4
The aspects discussed of the visited brand were constant updates, questions, social light talk and general marketing and promotion pitches. The firm advertises its existing and new products regularly while updating followers about changes in the company and its products. Also, the company regularly engages in questions regarding users’ opinions on products and the company. Competitions, offers, promotions and gifts for the users and brand users are also regularly provided.
The communication is done approximately seven times per day on average. The communication includes visual, word and sometimes audio uploads. Colorful pictures and banners constantly feature. Use of internet slang, lingo and abbreviations are also used together with hashtags and trending topics. The company does respond to customer’s tweets on a regular basis. Questions tweeted to the company are the most answered followed by complaint statements. The company seems very quick to avoid negative viral comments/posts relating to the firm.
