Diabetes is a disorder caused by an increased level of glucose concentration in the blood. It is as a result of abnormal metabolism of insulin hormone. The insulin hormone is secreted by the beta cell. Insulin regulates the metabolic process of glucose in the blood. The insulin hormone induces the body cell to absorb the glucose from the blood. The glucose is then used to produce energy ( Baron, S. H. 1980).. The functions of insulin if curbed in a diabetic patient and thus this leads to the poor absorption of sugar in the blood leading to high and increased level of glucose. It is categorized into three are explained as follows, the type 1 diabetes is caused as a result of damage to the beta cells of the pancreas. This leads to the decreased level of insulin production or even no production of insulin at all. The second type of diabetes is caused as a result of insufficient insulin in the body. The third and final type of insulin is the gestational diabetes caused by changes in hormonal production and shortage of insulin production especially during pregnancy.
There are few symptoms and signs of diabetes which are highlighted below, they include frequent urination, increased rate of weight loss, increased level of fatigue, vast appetite and increased level in demand for drinking water. A person experiences the frequent urination as a result of increased level of glucose in the blood above the usual standard level (Baron, S. H. 1980). The increased rate of urination causes the body to lose lot water from the body hence leading to dehydration. This causes the individual to take in a lot of water to replace the lost water. The main function of insulin is to stimulate the demand of food intake by the body hence increased level of appetite. Excessive loss of sugar in the urine causes the body to start oxidizing the proteins and fats in the body to use them as the energy source hence leading to loss of weight. An increased in the concentration of glucose in the blood leads to the change in the outward complexion of the eye lenses. This effect causes poor and blurred vision. Increased sugar level leads to the increased chances to damage to the nerves. Consequently this causes the wound to take long to heal.
In general, the immune system of a diabetic patient is generally low and hence when given medication, the defensive mechanism of the body is destructively affected hence leading to a number of infections. In the recent days with the increased level of technological advancement, patients are administered an insulin injection to control the level of insulin incase it’s a high leveled blood concentration bodied individual (Baron, S. H. 1980). In cases of low glucose concentration, glucagon injection is administered to the patient to increase its level. In the old days, cases of diabetes were very few and people with diabetes were advised on the nutrition to take, high blood sugar level individual were advised to minimize the intake of foods with high level of glucose to reduce the effect on the same. People who had low sugar concentration were advised to take a lot of foods with high level of glucose concentration and avoid vigorous exercise.
In conclusion, the article has really boosted my knowledge about diabetes and its causes and hence making me aware of the measures to take incase am a victim of the same. It has also enlightened me of the measures to take to avoid being a victim of the same.
