1) Reading over the points that both Dr. Shiva and Chandy/Gertz make about globalization, I firmly believe that both of their positions can be valid. I agree with Chandy and Gertz that globalization has, in fact, reduced poverty, much of it in ways that are not readily apparent. The increase in economic growth for developing nations due to globalization is ostensibly good for everyone, as it allows for the resources and infrastructure to eliminate disease, hunger and war. However, I also see Dr. Shiva’s points, as she claims that globalization is also changing these cultures for the worse, eliminating pastoral and agrarian livelihoods for the sake of a culture change that these countries are not ready for. I believe that both things can be true: globalization makes the country as a whole better, but the cultural changes are also leading to a tremendous push toward corporatism in globalization that eliminates these cultures and leads to massive despair.
2) Shiva’s points about water, poverty, farming and more can all be tied to globalization. She argues that, because globalization is actually more inefficient and disruptive to the harmony between man and nature, water usage, biodiversity and cultural integrity are all affected by globalization’s push to homogenize the country into one highly efficient corporate machine.
3) Shiva’s points about how globalization effects farming economies and the ecology are most convincing, while her points about hunger and poverty do not suitably address the economic development that globalization brings. Meanwhile, Chandy and Gertz successfully point out the economic benefits of globalization, while ignoring the points Dr. Shiva makes about the loss to culture and environment led by globalization.
