For the accomplishing of the previous task, we were interviewing Mr. George who is a food distribution program manager. He works with a charity organization ‘Feeding America’. This organization works with different organizations and personalities in order to provide people and families with low-income with food.
Summary of the interview
During the interview with Mr. George seemed to be friendly and quite talkative which we can consider as a good quality for a person who has to deal with people a lot. It was clearly seen that he is passionate about his job. Before the interview, he told us a lot of different stories from the work. Also, he put a lot of questions to me. From this, I can judge that he is really caring and he can make a person feel attention.
We have about 15 questions for our interview. We can subdivide them into two groups:
- Questions concerning the work experience;
- Questions concerning the success achieving (qualities a good worker should possess, needed knowledge, needed skills, etc.)
The interviewee shared with us all the information possible. He wasn’t avoiding any questions. Sometimes, he even told us more about some peculiarities of working process.
The answers of the interviewee
At first, we would like to dwell on the interviewee answers about the work experience and tasks. He worked more than 5 years in this organization. During this time, he changed a lot of different posts from a usual worker who helps with different organizational issues to the program manager. He likes his work a lot. He dreamt of working in the field of social help. Still, there were some points when it was too tough for him to deal with this job. For example, he told us that it was hard for him to meet all those people in need. It takes a lot of self-restraint not to get too emotional. What is more important is that you have to try to avoid offending people. Some of them do not like to feel sympathy or any kind of sorry.
Apart from academic preparation he advised having some practice before actual work. Different volunteering programs will be of a great use. You’ll never know how you’ll deal with such kind of people in live situations. Indifference is one of the best qualities here. You should show your respect and do everything you possibly can but deep inside it would be better for you to stay indifferent.
As for the work with donators he told us that it is a whole different story. It is important to be persistent and convincing. People who donate money need to be sure that your project worth this donation. Everything depends on you and your confidence.
Talking about the qualities that a person should possess in order to attain success he really sank into details. But from his words we understood that a person should be self-confident and straightforward. To attain the success you’ll have to overcome any sympathy for your character. If you are gentle and sweet-tempered this job will destroy you. You should have a purpose. You won’t be able to achieve any success without a clear goal. Also, you should work not for your own success but for the public good. You should care about those people as if they are your relatives. Still, you should be able to hide your real emotions in order to avoid any offense.
Personal reaction
It seems to me that this work demands a lot of time, hardiness, and feedback. Actually, any kind of social work is hard and a person should be inclined to such kind of job. I was really shocked with the admiration and enthusiasm that Mr. George has about his company. This interview was really informative. He was glad to tell every sing peculiarity of his workday, week, and everything we like to know. Despite his young age, he is a true leader and professional. We can say that he is an expert. We cannot but mention that he is an expert in the field of leadership strategies, too. For him, this work is like a hobby. He is all about it.
