For the discussion, the excerpt from the film ‘Dead Poets Society’ has been chosen. It depicts the studying process of the group of students who read aloud the piece of poetry and make own conclusions regarding it. Students in late adolescence encounter the meeting with the teacher, who tried sharing the concepts of understanding the poetry and making own conclusions upon it, changing students’ lives.
The scene portrays the teacher, who asks to read a piece of the poem and asks questions regarding it. The majority of students are concerned as, frankly speaking, they have not experienced much in own lives to understand the hidden meaning completely. As soon as the author’s note regarding time appears, boys make a wrongful conclusion about it, saying that author tries to hurry them up. Nonetheless, the true meaning of the phrase ‘Gather ye rosebuds while ye may’ is not about having lack of time, but about ‘seizing the day’ from Latin ‘Carpe diem’ and making one’s life extraordinary as one day, people will be nothing more but the food of worms. Throughout the scene students are concerned, looking at the teacher with curiosity and sometimes with a sense of disbelief. Till the end of the excerpt, teacher asks them to come up to the board with pictures of the former students and listen to the hidden message from them, which teacher whispers: seizing the moment and making the life extraordinary.
