For my elementary school, I attended a public school which was a Muslim school. The socioeconomic class of most of the people who lived in the neighborhood was medium and low. The fee structure of my school was low and provided proper learning facilities. So people used to send their children in this school As it was a Muslim school most of the children that came there were Muslim only. My school was a boy’s school only. So they were given difficult physical activities and we had rigorous physical training classes. I did my high school from a private school. Certain changes had occurred in the high school educational environment. This school was also an all boys school but it differed from my elementary school in terms of the socioeconomic background of the students. The students in this school belonged to high class. The school was addressing the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the community and the school was involved in several development activities in the society. The school from where I did my high school, used to serve the community by giving voluntary services for the betterment of the poor and the needy. There was little discrimination among the students from the high class and low class. The discrimninatory practices were reflected in the treatment of the teachers towards the students, the grades in academics and also the co-curricular activities that the students were encouraged. Sometimes teachers used to give higher grades to the high class students as compared to the low class students as they thought that would help these high class students to get better jobs and excel in their academics and career. The students were tracked academically and the school used to provide tutorials for students who were weak in certain subjects. The school did not follow a no child left behind policy. In the present day the nature of special education has become more complicated. The financial resources spent on special education are very high and requires high level of involvement of human resources. Special education is undergoing some major changes in its implementation. The changing education system and laws has formed a diverse group of students in the general education classroom and impacts the perception of general education teacher about special education. This inclusion of students with special needs into general education classes by providing them personalised attention develops a tangential relationship between general education and special education. But neither of my schools has an inclusive classroom. I like my school days, where I have spent most joyous time and gained several meaningful lessons of life, which had significantly influenced my personality. Days at elementary school has provided ample opportunity to flourish the distinct personality aspects, as moral and confidence building, enhancement of communication or interaction skills and exposure in different fields including study, co-curricular activities or sports. When I did my schooling, the focus of the curriculum and the learning process was more on textbooks and studies. Co-curricular activities, though existed, took a back seat. With the passing of time now-a-days, co-curricular activities an character building activities are increasingly being included in the learning process at schools. But co-education schools coming into existence is still a distant dream. Most of the schools in the country are single gender schools.
