Academic Readiness
An emotional challenge presented itself when my father was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and had major surgery. This happened ten years after my parents divorced; yet, it felt like a heavy burden since we were a “close knit” family. During this time, there were temporary bouts of anxiety since this was the biggest challenge I faced. Nonetheless, coping with father’s health situation did not present a learning obstacle or hinder my academic performance. I focused on studies and finished Saline High School with a 3.0 GPA and scored 21 on the ACT. I also managed to earn “most improved” awards in basketball and Tang Soo Do. My ability to balance academic life and sports activities through sheer determination is the same energy that will be used when attending college.
The only cultural challenge experienced was during a ten-day trip traveling through Switzerland, France, and Amsterdam. Though I’ve successfully completed three years of Spanish, not speaking French or German presented a temporary inconvenience. However, we were creative and resourceful when dealing with the communication issue. Using the GPS helped navigate local travel and finding English speakers allowed us to dine comfortably with them interpreting menu items at restaurants visited.
Now that I’ve successfully completed high school, I’m ready to achieve my dream of joining the business world and becoming a productive member of society. The business world offers several opportunities: starting a business, owning a franchise, or being employed in a management position with a major corporation. Deciding which business opportunity to pursue after graduation will be determined, in part, by the academic training received. Therefore, much time and effort went into researching which institution would complement my academic goals.
When considering which academic institution to apply, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) was at the top of my list because it is not only known as one of America’s 100 best colleges, but also provides a rich academic environment in Business Administration. GVSU boosts an excellent study-abroad program, which is another reason for pursuing an undergraduate degree at your university. And being located in Grand Rapids, it’s only a short distance from my home
In summary, I have successfully achieved every academic and athletic goal envisioned, grown from all volunteer experiences, and now ready for another educational adventure at GVSU. I am determined, dedicated, and driven to realize my goal; and provided the opportunity, I will rise to meet the academic challenges at your university and become a graduate that GVSU can be proud of.
