Edward Weston's Pepper #30 Essay Sample

I love the piece from the first look. The color of the piece is good, the size and even the shape. The piece is impressive and beautiful. At first, the image is a bit confusing as what the photographer was taking, and what the piece really represents or looks like. I’m viewing the piece from a book, a collection of pictures from Edwards Weston. The picture is three dimensional (3D). Weston took the picture by placing the pepper in the opening of a funnel. By placing it in the opening of a funnel, the image could be lighted to make it three dimensions instead of a flat image. The linage of the pepper gives it an S curve that looks like that shape of the female body. The image looks like the back of a female body, with a bottom that likes like the buttocks of a female as well. It looks a bit light from the angles that the picture was taken at. Though the bottom of the picture looks like the buttocks of a female body, it also looks a bit masculine. The body of the pepper from the picture also looks smooth, firm and thick, like the body of a well fed human. The radiation from the light makes the top part of the pepper to reflect the light that in turn makes it look white. The body is a bit black and towards the bottom of the pepper it becomes a little bit gray. The motion of the picture is real. The subject seems to have occupied very little space as from the picture itself, the image looks a bit small. The bottom part of the pepper looks a bit small and should have occupied little area. The height of the pepper is also small considering all the curving. The image stirs some bit of emotion. Considering the fact that it looks like the human body, it brings to mind the way nature brings about the closeness of humans to natural things. It also looks edible and sweet, and very healthy for that matter. The piece relates to the title in that it depicts the many ways in which we can interpret a piece of art. It has helped in understanding the art of the artist and the meaning he was trying to put across; the way natural forms relate to living beings especially humans. The image needs a lot of time as one has to concentrate on the lighting and the positions that have to position their subject so as to get the best shot. Some training is also needed especially on how to position the subjects against the light and the right lenses one can use. My impression now is different from the first one. The lighting of the image makes it have different colors ate every level, and I have a better understanding of what the image is; a pepper.
