During my years of study, I have had both effective and ineffective instructors in my classes. The teacher who I remember as being the most positive was Mr. Bander, who taught math. Along with some of the other students, I was having problems with some of the procedures. Mr. Bander used a teaching method of cooperation between classmates. I not only improved my ability to communicate, but made a friend, too. Mr. Bander also used dialogue in his classes and assigned groups for discussions. In addition, he opened his heart to his students and I went to him for advice for any problem in or out of school. At one point, I approached him and stated I wanted to stop my education and get a job. Mr. Bander said to me, “The time for study is painful, but if you don’t do it, the pain lasts a lifetime.” Taking his advice, I stayed in school and today, I am a lecturer enrolled in the Masters program at Clark University.
Fortunately, I have not had many ineffective instructors. There was one history teacher, however, who has stayed in my memory as one of the worst. He was aggressive with most of the students and I have often wondered if he was tired of teaching, had had disappointments in life, or was simply not a nice person. History was one of my favorite subjects, but the instructor’s teaching methods made the class unpleasant. He didn’t assign many activities in the classroom, and instead had the students do assignments alone or listen to him lecture. His lecture style was even poor, droning and almost as if he was reading from a book. However, he was afraid of the school director and when the director visited the class, the teacher would assign us activities. This showed me that the teacher had the ability to teach the class in a much better manner than he practiced. The students viewed him as a dictator and many of them did not pass their examinations. The subject matter was not difficult, but the teacher did not engage the students in the topics and even though I like history, I was not interested either.
In my opinion formed by my experiences with many different types of teachers throughout my schooling, there are three characteristics needed to be a great instructor. First, a great instructor must know the subject which he or she teaches very well. It is extremely important to pass along the correct information to students. As a person progresses higher in his education, this becomes more crucial since many topics are complicated and even small pieces of incorrect education may have a serious impact. Second, a great teacher must make his method of teaching engaging, keeping the attention of the students. This can be done in a number of ways; he may be an entertaining and informative lecturer, or use teaching methods such as study groups or projects, or bring unusual elements into the class such as exhibits or lecturers. Some students respond to some teaching methods and some to others, so an instructor should use many different types. Finally, a great instructor must care about the students he teaches. This reason will prompt him to teach his class in the most effective manner possible to promote the success of his students in the classroom and in their futures. By having all three of these characteristics, any teacher can be a great instructor.
