Dreams have continued to marvel human conscience since antiquity retaining their mystical attraction. They have continued to remain a mystery to human beings sometimes having a pleasing, as well as scaring and terrorizing effect. It has been estimated that an average human being spends a third of his/her life asleep. However, while sleeping the human brain stays active sorting various issues, filing and discarding the thoughts and images gathered, while active during the day. This happen involuntarily, creating sensations, emotions, ideas and images when one is asleep (Acharya para 2).
These dreams have an effect on individual various aspects of life such as quality of sleep and on the social life. For example, they have a direct impact on an individual quality of sleep. If an individual have pleasant dreams, he/she will be able to fall asleep quicker and often wakes up rejuvenated. However, when an individual experiences nightmares, their sleep will be interrupted by various fear induced wake-ups. In addition, they also have an effect on an individual mood during the day depending on the tone of the dream. For example, the effect of dreams on an individual is highly expressed and reflected during the morning hours. A nightmare will have a negative effect on the moods making one sad or feeling down (McNamara para 3). On the other hand, a pleasant and good dream can make an individual glowing and happy all day.
The mysteries of dreams have attracted numerous researchers in the modern science even in the twenty first century characterized with improved technology. Some seek to establish the impact of dreams on day-to-day life of an individual, which are either positive or negative. However, the issue has been perceived as spiritual or Para-psychological matter beyond the precepts of physical sciences. Various religious scriptures comprise descriptions of dreams, as well as their impacts. Dreams are also premonitions, and contain profuse descriptions of events that may take place in future (Acharya para 5). However, not all people are able to draw conclusions based on their dreams, but pious and spiritual people have been able to develop capabilities of drawing conclusions from a dream.
The effects of dreams vary from one dream to the other while some dreams manifest within a short period of time and others take a long period of time to show their outcome. Dreams have been broadly classified into three categories, which include strange dreams, premonition dreams and dreams that reflect real life. Strange dreams result in strange feelings to the dreamer and have little or no connection with the reality. For example, when an individual dreams about huge elephants flying or an individual with five heads, but these dreams do not have any connection with reality.
Premonition dreams are further categorized into those that augur well and those that augur ill. These dreams have a long lasting effect on an individual. For example, an individual dreams about an angel of death taking his life representing mishap. It can also involve visiting good places such as temples and churches presenting blessings and are pleasant. The third classification of dreams is those that show real thing, and they represent things of much importance to people. However, they have been found to materialize rarely, but fulfill individual unfulfilled desires. For example, an individual who have continuously desired to become a king and dreams being a king fulfills his incomplete desire (Acharya para 7). The effect of such dreams only last during the period of dream and when the sleep is disturbed the effect of such a dream also vanish.
