In my entire life history, music has been one of the most powerful and fundamental things that I associate with up to date. Life without harmonies and melodies would be completely empty. By simply playing and listening to different kinds of tunes, it can help me ease stress, for motivation during hard moments as well as relaxing during my leisure time. At an age when I just listened to any music playing in the background, through into my teenage years when I wanted to associate with a particular genre of music and up to know when my mood dictates what to listen to. Either to ease stress, relax, or just meditate on something (Hoffer, 2012). Mostly I enjoy listening to music while going to school as it is a way of helping me prepare to face the awaiting day. Having been there throughout my life, music is like memoirs to me since it has affected my social, emotional and psychological life.
At a young age, my interest and love of music was not as great as it is now. Mostly I would just listen to whatever music playing next door or anything my parents chose to listen to. I did not pay much attention about any forms of music compositions by then. Sometimes a bit of hip hop here and there was unquestionably my favorite back then. Be it in the house, the car, or just elsewhere there surely would be some Tupac, the game, or Celine Deon is playing constantly in the background (DeNora, 2000). Back then, I did not concentrate much on the genre of music, but now that I am older, it gets enjoyable since I get to reminisce about my childhood memories back then.
After my teenage, music became part of my life and started to gradually get into my soul. Mostly I would listen to pop music due to the nature of its beats and the kind of slang language used by the musicians. It provoked some sort of energy in me, and I would mostly sing along with some lyrics, for example, Tupac’s “Hit EM up” song (Katsh & Merle-Fishman, 1998). At times, some hip hop songs were mostly concentrated on the day to day lives of ghetto people who were at times associated with indulging in crimes to survive. As a teenager, I would indulge in petty fights at school and unnecessary arguments with my parents as I mostly found them to be so strict on me and I felt that they denied me the freedom that I so much wanted. I did all this just to fit in with my peers at that time. This made me be a rebellious kid and always got me punished for it.
Music is able to convey emotions of all kinds, and it helps me relax at times no matter the situation at that particular moment. Be it at times of happiness and joy or despair and sadness through harmonies, lyrics and rhythm music portrays it. Nick Jonas song “A little bit longer” is so inspiring and emotional that when it is played I almost shed tears and mostly get moving while watching it playing live (DeNora, 2000). At times, music inspires me and describes my feelings in a way I cannot do with just mere words. Music affects our emotions differently as it can move some people into tears or make others laugh out loud.
Some songs can make me happy or make me cry depending on the memories that they bring back. For me, music is like a remedy when I am feeling low, and it brings joy during my happy moments. It plays a vital role in my life and expresses my feelings when I cannot find enough words to express myself. I embrace versatile kinds of music like Rap and Pop as well as Rhythm and Blues. Mariah Carey is my favorite RnB artist, with her voice and style of singing which raises my spirit high.
There are images that music creates which is quite breathtaking. It has the ability to rekindle memories that are forgotten or lost in life. Songs like country or classical music can depict a story as it is being narrated (DeNora, 2000). Classic music, for example, can be able to tell a story without the use of the lyrics which is quite outstanding.
Music connects people of different cultures, race, tribe, or even religions in the world. It is like a universal language which most people relate to. Through music, I have found amazing friends. Some of whom I met through music websites. I might never meet them in my entire life, but we share our ideas about music and life with them. Therefore, music is a global phenomenon it has connected people, and it has become part and parcel of peoples day to day live. Music means a lot to me. It is like there is a song for everything I feel and am yet to find all of them. Therefore, music is part of lifetime journey and only stops when your heart stops beating, and you are no more in this world. Music will never end as it is said “music is the only thing that is found in both heaven and earth” (Giger & Mathiesen, 2002).
Music not only touches the heart, but it can manifest itself by separating humanity from animals. It is an amazing force that establishes international love, brotherhood and peace. During times of calamities and disasters musicians come together globally and compose songs to raise funds to help those affected. This is a clear indication that what articles and speeches cannot manage to convey, music has magic to do it easily. Let all humanity stand up and give a standing ovation to music.
