Module 6 – Final Exam
Skills summary
Upon successfully completing this course, I came to realize that I possess a certain set of skills which, if applied in the workplace environment, is able to unleash the maximum potential of any individual in the field of Risk Management and EHS, irrespective of the nature of the business.
In the course of my search for internship, I had the capacity to state that I was involved in these various certifications and courses which really helped me a lot in different job interviews, especially due to the fact that I did not possess much experience in terms of risk or safety management, and I happened to be a foreign student which automatically narrowed down my employment options since organizations which deal with governmental contracts were unable to hire me.
After being appointed in the position of safety intern at the Boswell Energy Center, a division of Minnesota Power, I feel it is my responsibility to carry out my duty and use my newly acquired skills in the best possible way; act upon my words:
Since I have acquired ICS and NIMS certification, I am in a position to assist in the organization of emergency response groups, and use new emergency management methods in an efficient manner to carry out recognition of hazards and devise valuable mitigation actions. At present, I am conscious that preparedness efforts make a huge difference between coming afloat following a catastrophe and shutting down a business while being forced to view several of your men deal with economical hardship and layoffs. The greatest threat of power generation to the commencement of business happens to be the eventual impact on the environment brought about by an ecological disaster; mitigation of dangers and fast, coordinated emergency reaction is vital, something which I can contribute to in modest proportions and even offer my views.
Another acquired skill set which I can utilise in the course of my internship when opportunity arises is building security. As I mentioned above, this particular energy center happens to be situated in the midst of lakes, forests and sensitive ecosystems; the product of terrorist actions or vandalism are likely to have a devastating impact on the economy and environment. This knowledge toolbox can also help with other facets like forecasting how features of buildings can avert workplace sexual misconduct, bullying, mobbing, among other transgressions. Arguments have often been forwarded by architects that designs have a positive effect on the activity performances. Moreover, this module has helped me acquire the knowledge needed to sustain my attitude on illumination, sightlines, colours and sizes of signs, housekeeping subjects as well as plans for emergency exits beyond the proposals of compliance.
Regarding the course for first aid instructor, I am prepared to assist in the personnel training process at the Boswell Energy Center. This will provide me the chance to showcase this talent and indulge in my preferred activity – instruct. Though I’m unsure about the presence of their own onsite staff, it will benefit you greatly to have an individual of your own who is capable of training your workers. First Aid & EAD and CPR skills come in handy in many instances and it will bring you some relief to know that you have someone who is able to put these skills to use, especially in regions with challenging and touch working conditions. People are prone to suffer from exhaustion due to heat, more so in summer; contusions are common in others due to falls or situational emergencies. In spite of precautionary measures, if an accident occurs, these skills can prove advantageous.
Regular drills for emergency training are a must, and after the fulfillment of this course, there is no doubt that I am able to help in the coordination of such process, and anticipate an opportunity for it.
Industries of this sort must have emergency continuity plans in place, owing to the effects of interruption of generation on the supply chain’s lower levels. In fact, it excites me when I consider the chance to view and comprehend, first hand, the way in which power generation firms handle these situations, along with the measures they have taken to secure a safe and constant energy source. This course helped me develop a few ideas I might share if I’m ever asked to comment on the issue. If this industry accepts me for the management of safety and loss control, I’ll be fully prepared to review and/or develop plans for emergency continuity.
Part 2: Feedback on execution of class
- Module 1: Incident Command System
It is my firm belief that courses available on the internet are really beneficial; in fact, I plan to go back and pursue some of the more advanced level courses since these certifications will not only enhance the value of my resume but of others as well. I am aware of the reputation of online courses but if the students are able to meet even once to discuss the course material or study in groups, it will prove really helpful.
- Module 2: Building Security
The provided material was extremely useful and supported hands-on application. Possible chances for development may arise if the students are scheduled to use the instrument to clear up some issues that earlier appeared confusing and vague.
- Module 3: First Aid Response
This offers a fine experience for learning. It is ideal to search for options in order to gain “access to learning dollars” financing. A more economical choice would be for students to study by themselves and pay some kind of fee in exchange for simply taking the practical and theory exams, and their card. This will allow students, especially graduate students, avoid the trouble of coordinating with each other’s hectic schedules.
- Module 4: Emergency Training and Drills
I must add students will benefit if they are able to locate an opportunity where they are required to coordinate emergency drills and training, and practice the same in the form of a group assignment.
- Module 5: Emergency Continuity Plans
A good source of motivation is reading groups, especially for students who do not prefer reading activities. This will prevent procrastination and provide you with impetus to read since you have to take part in discussions.
- Communications from the instructor
Every instructor needs to employ straightforward and simple techniques. He should empathize with the needs of students. However, Module 3 tends to disorient them a bit; future involvement with the Red Cross once more will solve this issue, since the details were not clear and often crucial information was missed via e-mail by some member of the group.
- Inclusion of the book into the course
Refer to Module 5
- Overall workload
Students will find that the total workload isn’t at all extenuating. Prior organization will help avoid the problem of overdue assignments.
- How to make the online experience for each student better
Studying in groups makes the activity more enjoyable even if it is for an online course. Arranging a schedule for group meetings is a good idea before the due date of each assignment. Students who are out of town can join the discussion through Skype.
