The poem “I am nobody, who are you?” is written by Emily Dickinson. This poem is published in the year 1891.
The poem is about a child who asks question from others, and tells about him. This poem is an interesting as it tells clearly how somebody is living in this world, and how nobody is living in this world. By nobody the poetess means those people who do not consider themselves important, those who do not give priority to themselves. They consider the rights of others, and respect others. While somebody are those who consider themselves the privileged one , and think that it is their utmost right to get respect, love and everything from others.
The main character is the poetess herself. She is pointing to herself in a comical way and asking about others. She wants to know that how much people know well about them and how much people are living in a fancy world. The writer tells that how a person who has a little child inside and that child asks about his existence and other’s existence too. The poetess is asking that is it true that everyone asks the same question, according to the poetess the one who recognizes himself and then tells honestly that who they are, such type of people are the really true and honest person
This poem starts with a very strange question. It is a question which usually one never asks from others. But in this poem the poetess has first started from herself. She asked from herself that who is she? And in the response to the question she answered that I am nobody. And at the same time asks from others. She asks the same question. The poetess has asked in a very tactful manner. She didn’t ask in a bitter way or harsh way. But very politely and very softly she first introduced herself by saying that I am nobody. After asking from others, the poetess has answered that yes all are agreed to my question. And she then relates herself to the one who reads the poem. She then compares herself and says that yes all whoever read this poem is asking the same question from others. The poetess feels so happy when she finds one another just like her. According to her if someone is somebody it is not a secret or any good idea. But if someone is nobody, it is a great secret, and a mystery. The poetess then made it clear that to be nobody is a good thing, but somebody is depressing than this. Somebody can be compared to the lot of people living in a society. The people who are somebody are just like frogs or public gathering. They have no main purpose of life. These people are self-centered people. They only know about themselves. Do not care about others. And these people also consider that the people should acknowledge them, the people all around them should praise them. In her last lines the poetess has expressed the society actual face. The society is full of selfish, self-centered people. This poem can be grouped into a satirical poem. Many will say this poem a comic poem, but in reality it is a satire. The poetess has made it clear that people all around us want themselves to be the center of attraction, and at the same time the people want that other people just praise them. I really enjoyed this poem. This poem is started with an interesting note. But when we go down we come to the conclusion that it is written in some specific context. It is not just telling and asking about somebody, nobody, it is about the feelings of people and about the importance of people. This poem is a good literature. This poem seems to be a comic one but it provides a very good comparison between people who are caring about others and the people who just want others to take care of the people. The author’s purpose was to show that how public figures in this world are addicted to the praise of others and how public figures use the simple people for their own cause. The poem tells us that how any author can show its point of view to others. How cleverly the poetess has described what she wanted to say. Whatever she wanted to put into the minds of reads, she was succeeded in her point.
This poem depicts the true nature of the poetess. The poetess has the style of explaining very major problems in a very light way. Same is the case with this poem of Emily Dickinson. In this poem the satire is very clearly seen. How those who consider themselves a superior, and think that the world should revolve around them, give no importance to others. Such people are addicted to the behavior where they are always at the receiving end. They can never think of giving something to others, but they only expect from others.
In short we can summarize that the poetess has given the benefits of those who are nobody, and also has put in the category of nobody. And somebody according to her are living a very miserable life.
