On love, Emma makes it her point of ensuring that everyone else has a suitable suitor for them, other than herself. She is even frustrated in the instance of Harriet and Mr. Elton that she remarks; there are people, who the more you do for them the less they’ll do for themselves (Jane Austen, pg114). Her point of having a man involved in a girl’s life is for the financial benefit of it and nothing else. She reckons that when a girl has money, she does not need a man, rather a little excitement in her life. Her idea of lover is not clear, as the man she imagines having a romantic relationship with does not live up to her expectations in real life. Frank, for instance, does not turn out to be as great as she had earlier anticipated. She does not seem to see the man, Mr. knightly, who she finally seems to love, in romantic perspectives. She sees their relationship as one out of respect rather than romance. She does not want to lose friendship of the people she loves; she adores peace and would rather sacrifice love for the sake of peace.
Emma, however, despite all her shortcomings, is very respectful of family. She has unwavering love for her father and goes out of her way to make his life comfortable. She organizes for him dinner parties with friends to keep him company. Her commitment to his father is underlined when she vows not to get married until his death. Mr. knightly however, talks her out of it and she eventually gets betrothed to him.
