Understanding Emotive Theory: G.E. Moore’s Criticism
In G.E Moore’ “Objectivity of Moral Judgments”, he reasons that emotive theory is misleading in the understanding of right and wrong. The emotive theory of ethics bases on the argument that ethics premises on the argument if wrongness and rightness. However, Moore’s offers a strong and stringent criticism of this supposition. According to Moore, humans have conditioned themselves to say wring or wrong describes their feelings. It is dangerous to reason on emotive theory because feelings towards right and wrong are heavily influenced by individual sensibilities.
First, Moore reasons that if one has one feeling over an action, then the determinant attitude will allow me to ascertain its rightness or wrongness. The second point of the argument reasons that if two people disagree over an action, then the given actions has the possibility of being right and wrong at the same time. Perhaps a Look at two different stages of the society can illustrate the understanding: The definition of wrong or right graduates over time. The word right thus has to hold some water to it. Like Shakespeare once said, “nothing is wrong or right, but thinking makes it so.” The absence of objectivity defies the ultimate realization of the wrongness or rightness of a particular thing.
In conclusion, the emotive theory is wrong because it allows for the presence of contradiction. When one person states their feelings, and defines an activity, action or a situation as wrong, and the other individual does the same, the general quagmire is the difference of opinion. Emotive theory becomes a fallacy.
