In the first place, I will show a genuine interest in Jim and listen to him with empathy as I probe the reason for his indifferent behavior in the workplace during the last three months. I believe certain circumstances in Jim’s personal life that challenges his work-life balance are attributable to his current behavior. I will begin the conversation by quoting certain incidents from my past professional life wherein I struggled to maintain a proper work-life balance because of certain pressing personal matters. This will encourage Jim to open up further so that I can understand his real problem so as to suggest proper solutions. Also, my sharing would help Jim to understand that he is not alone in the world in addition to bridging the gap he may feel existed between us. More importantly, opening the conversation without any reprimand would motivate Jim to feel at ease.
Secondly, I recollect Jim’s valuable contribution during the past nine months without a vague tone. I would rehearse the script beforehand by clearly going through his personal records. I will specifically recollect certain past events in which his contributions were widely appreciated by the organization. For example, I will quote certain incidents that influenced fellow employees in the workplace that would rejuvenate his energy. More importantly, telling Jim how his behavior of late has been causing problems in the workplace with a tone that I am not against Jim, but against his behavior would help me to motivate him. I will explain how taking unnecessary things to heart spoils both his family as well as profession. I will illustrate how Jim is trying to take ownership for certain problems that are beyond his control that are responsible for his current behavior.
Before concluding, I will remind his dream goals and what would happen if he continues to behave the way he does during the past three months. In short, listening more to Jim and reminding him of his past contribution would motivate him to come out of the current mindset and start afresh with a renewed vigor.
