In healthcare, law and ethics may refer to the conditions that enable the medical practitioners and nurses to deliver high-quality services. There are instances where the human beings have been denied excellent services following exposure to improper handling by the medical practitioners. Also, there have been a number of ill practices in the healthcare sector that make the services for the patients unappealing. Some instances have indicated the relevance of ethics and ethical training, which has been ignored for some time. There are problems that have come up following lack of consideration of the ethics in the healthcare sector. Such problems include; distribution of pharmaceutical drugs, the practice of training doctors, medicine practices such as organ transplant, drug testing, and physician assisted suicide among others. As such, there is need for a reliable ethical training that will educate people on the significance of ethics in the delivery of medical services.
The relevance for ethical considerations may come following the existence of a number of problems in the healthcare sector. The manner by which a number of processes are handled is not the most appealing and there is need for change in the processes through consideration of certain ethics. The Medical Practitioners have to be exposed well enough to ensure they handle the relevant roles accordingly.
The distribution of pharmaceutical drugs is one of the main problems that the healthcare sector faces. The pharmaceutical companies are not responsible enough to ensure the drug distribution process is done with the consideration of the best strategies. There are certain principles that have been ignored and they have made the distribution of pharmaceutical drugs unethical. The distribution of the pharmaceutical drugs is usually linked to changes in prices without consideration of the patients who may not afford the drugs at high prices.
During epidemics, the patients require drugs to deal with the situation. It becomes unfortunate when the patients cannot afford the drugs following the hike in prices. The pharmaceutical companies are responsible of the production of the drugs that would be required to save the situation. However, they fail by dictating higher prices than normal making the drugs unaffordable to most of the people. The condition may leave very many patients untreated since they cannot afford the drugs. In an instance where the epidemic is exceedingly dangerous, death may occur. As such, the actions by the pharmaceutical company may be termed as unethical.
There are instances where the pharmaceutical companies support production of counterfeit drugs. They do not want to follow the production process that will lead to the production of generic drugs that will be supportive to proper healing. Although, the counterfeit drugs are different from the normal drugs, they are priced similarly. At such a point, the patient is denied access to proper medicine and he ends up paying higher price. It is unethical for the pharmaceutical companies to be inconsiderate of the health of the patients by selling the wrong drugs and charging higher prices.
Another problem exists in the medicine practice and it entails organs transplant. The organ transplantation procedure would be termed as one of the most gripping medical advances. It offers a way of giving life to a patient whose organs may have failed. The process requires the participation of other human beings as well as the society by donating organs from a living individual or a dead person. The organs transplant processes are extremely sensitive and they require the intervention of medical ethics to ensure they are undertaken in the most outstanding way
The manner in which the process may be undertaken may prove the unethical bit of the processes. The organ transplant process s very expensive and unaffordable to most of the people in the society. At some point, the organs have to be purchased if no individual wishes to offer his voluntarily. Therefore, the individuals who cannot afford the drugs cannot undergo the process. The process may favor a group of people at the expense of others following their financial ability.
The process is risky when transplanting an organ from a living human being. There are risks associated with the organ transplant where one is likely to lose his life. It becomes one of the most trying moments for the physician who has been assigned the transplant responsibility. He has to be extremely keen and he has to watch that he does not cause harm on the individual. Some medical practioners are not ready to undertake the process in a living being as they think it would be a dangerous activity. At some point, the process may be delayed as the medical practitioners are fearful of the consequences.
The demand for organs is high while the supply may be extremely low. The distribution for the organs may become a challenge as there are no clear criteria that would be followed to make the process suit everyone. At such a point, chances for an individual to lack proper consideration are very high. The practitioners are likely to be corrupted along the way. They may not be out to offer the best solution. In such a situation, the services are extended in the favor of the rich who can afford bribes and money to purchase the organs. It is unethical since the most deserving person will be denied the opportunity to enjoy good health.
The organ transplantation process should be voluntary and no individual should be pushed to it regardless of the situation. As such, it is the duty of the donor to offer permission on whether his organ should be removed. This is mainly sensitive in cases where the organ is to be transplanted from a deceased person. The necessary permission needs to be granted by the individual while alive or proper agreement should be reached between the medical practitioners and the donor. It would be unethical to have an organ harvest where the donors are consulted whether dead or alive.
Another problem that would require ethical consideration is the assisted suicide for patients. Regardless of their situation at a given time, the patients should be granted an opportunity to make decisions concerning their health conditions. However, when a patient is critically ill it is hard for them to make decisions. It becomes exceedingly challenging to define what will befall such parents. It may get to a point where the solution to the problem that the patient is undergoing is death and the medical practitioner may find it difficult to take the patient through the process.
Suggesting death to a patient is one of the most challenging activities that the medical practitioner would wish to undertake. The process may be highly challenging since a lot of factors must be considered. It is the responsibility of the practitioner to offer the necessary medication to ensure the wellbeing of the patient. However, it becomes difficult when the patient is not responsive to medication and the health condition deteriorates with time. The termination of the life of the individual becomes the most significant solution at the time.
The family of the patient is required to intervene in line with his consent so as to deal with the situation at the specific time. The practitioner is left without an option when the patient opts for the termination of his life. The medical practitioner offers the relevant exposure to the family regarding the situation of the patient and why the termination of the life is the only solution to the pain and the problem that the patient is experiencing at the time. The decision may be extremely hard for the medical practitioners since it may be a proof for the end of his ability.
Abortion is the other ethical problem that healthcare sector faces. According to the law, abortion is illegal and every member of the society should act in the protection of the lives of fetus. However, it usually gets to a point where abortion becomes the only solution to the complication that a woman may be experiencing during pregnancy. Some hardships may develop during the pregnancy and the woman is required to terminate the pregnancy.
After exploring all the methods to solve the problem that the individual is experiencing, abortion stands as the remaining consideration for the physician. It is an extremely hard decision for the medical practitioner since it is his responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of the mother and the child. Therefore, getting into a conclusion for abortion is a tough decision and a critical process that requires exhaustive consultations. The medical practitioner may be hesitant to the decision but it becomes the ultimate solution to the problem that the mother is experiencing at the time.
Form the above problems; it is evident that the medical practitioners need to approach the situations with necessary attitude, which involves respect for the set ethical standards. Like other professions, the medical field is usually governed by some ethics, which act as a guide on the behavior of the professionals on duty. They are supposed to undertake their responsibilities in line with the rules or conditions set by the existing body.
The ethical standards set for the medical practitioners should be in line with the activities that the medical practitioners are required to undertake from time to time. One of the main responsibilities for the medical practitioners is to offer high-quality services to the patients. Regardless of what it may cost them, the practitioners must be willing to participate in the dissemination of quality medical services.
As such, ethical training becomes a major requirement for the medical fraternity. The main purpose for the ethics training is to allow the employees to identify and counter the ethical problems which are common in the daily choices and actions that people undertake. The training would also be effective in allowing individuals to understand, share, as well as apply the values that have been stipulated in the code of ethics.
The training would be undertaken with the involvement of all the stakeholders. There must be an agreement between the stakeholders on the values that would work best for the healthcare sector. The medical practitioners and other workers in the sector will be informed of the conditions that they need to satisfy as medical professionals and workers in the healthcare centers.
The training will begin my exposing the medical practitioners to the needs of the patients. The patients are the core purpose for the existence of the medical practitioners. Therefore, they are the top priority in the activities of the practitioner. In the training, the medical practitioners will be required to respect the patients as their core purpose in the healthcare centers. They need to give them the necessary concentration and treat them with the deserved respect. The training will also emphasize to the medical practitioners that proper health of the patient is their responsibility and they should do everything to help the patients achieve full and proper health.
The training will also touch on the ability to identify and analyze ethical dilemmas. The medical practitioners will be involved in various medical activities where they will be required to undertake certain medical processes or procedures. However, at some point they will not be aware of what they ought to do to resolve certain ethical situations. Dealing with a dilemma needs exclusive exposure to the available ethical considerations that would be helpful in resolving the problem.
The training will also consider the situations of decision-makers. Not all medical practitioners are allowed to execute decisions regarding certain conditions. Certain people are required to make decisions on behalf of a certain department and they should be trained on how to interpret and apply corporate values in the specific decisions that they wish to undertake. The decisions must also be considerate of their relationships with the rest of the stakeholders.
Further, the training will be done with the strengthening of the communication of the values of the healthcare center. The values and standards of the healthcare center must be outlined and defined accordingly for the involved parties. They must be trained on how to undertake certain procedures with respect for the values that govern the specific sector. The decisions that the practitioners undertake must be in line with the values that govern activities in the healthcare center.
Also, the medical practitioners must be trained on the relevance of working as a group and respecting each partner’s contribution to the achievement of the success of the healthcare center. Individuals must be taught on how to make decisions as a group and how to ensure they make the most outstanding decisions for particular instances. Teamwork comes with mutual respect for the partners and the involvement of equal efforts, which all the parties must offer.
This kind of training will be highly effective for a number of factors. It will touch on the role of every stakeholder in defining excellence in services delivery for healthcare centers. It guides every stakeholder on how to deal with certain situations while on duty. It removes the conflicts that may exist in the delivery of services. As such, individuals are assured of quality services in the healthcare centers since every individual knows and undertakes his responsibility accordingly.
Also, the training will be highly effective in improving the healthcare of the people since the most critical values in the delivery of services will be considered and treated vital. The medical practitioners will be aware of the path that they need to deliver quality services. The medical practitioners will be aware that it is their responsibility to ensure good health for their parents. Therefore, they will do all they can to deliver the most outstanding services for the patients.
Ethical standards are core in defining how certain processes are undertaken. Ethical standards are usually viewed as the beginning of where the law starts since the two works in hand. The law has certain guidelines regarding medical practices but the medical practitioner have to be trained on how to offer quality services through exposure to the necessary ethical standards. Ethical training is a reasonable process as it exposes the medical practitioners to the necessary processes that they should undertake when faced with difficult situations in their work.
