The majority of energy used in the world consists of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal. However, at the current usage rates, the Earth will run out of fossil fuel, and the population will have an energy shortage. Many researchers are now looking into renewable sources of energy to combat the threat of exhaustion of our current energy sources. Renewable energy sources are ones that use the aspects of the Earth that cannot be consumed, and therefore, we would never be depleted. Waterfalls, wind, and solar power are three renewable sources of energy that people are using today.
Moving water as a source of energy has been around for hundreds of years, ever since water mills were created during the Industrial Revolution. Today, scientists are using creating bigger waterfalls by using dams to force water through a turbine which will generate energy that can be consumed. As long as water is plentiful, then these types of hydroelectric plants can be used to produce power. However, with droughts occurring across some parts of the world, this renewable source might not be as abundant in the future.
Another form of renewable energy is the sun. Solar panels are created to capture sunlight and activate particles that will generate electricity. As long as the panels are exposed to sunlight, then the panels can produce unlimited energy. The only issue with this type of renewable energy is that the sun is expected to eventually burn out and if a person lives in a climate that does not have constant sun exposure then they will be limited in their energy capture.
The last type of renewable energy is wind. Throughout the world, wind farms consisting of giant fans generate energy by having the naturally-occurring wind turn the fan’s blades. As opposed to water and sunlight, there is no immediate threat of the wind dying, however, the location of these farms are paramount in consistently creating energy.
As the world looks to transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources, water, wind, and solar energy will become more important to fill humans need for energy. It is important that humans continue to research these technologies and invest in discovering other types of renewable energy.
