Introduction
Engineering as a course is seen to be prestigious, and most parents would want their children to study it in college. The parents see it as a profession that is well paying, and this guarantees their children brighter future. The reason I chose engineering over other disciplines is because from the time I was a child I always had a passion in this technical and crucial field. My interest and passion made me pursue engineering course and ignore all the other disciplines. I made the choice voluntarily so that after completing it, I will be in a position to serve my country through coming up with solutions to the technical hurdles, which at times limit the development of our country. My decision to enroll to HTC as an engineering student was the best decision I have ever made. I enjoy learning the concepts of this field and also love what I normally learn as each day passes. In UAE community, engineering is a prestigious major as all the other disciplines. There are hardships in this major as it is in other majors. The hardships are morally and financial as compared to other courses. I have a passion in this field as I have often been creative and innovative. I aspire to be one of the best innovators in the field.
Majoring in engineering is beneficial because the industry is growing and stable. Stability implies that one will never lack a job wrong since the industry will always demand more skilled manpower to march its increasing demand in the future. Both public and private institutions especially in the construction sector, as well as technological sector, keeps on expanding as the economy grows. The expansion of the above sectors is an indication that majoring in the engineering is a guarantee to the young engineers that their skills are highly wanted, and the industry will always absorb them. The United Arab Emirates economy is anticipated to grow at a rate of 4.5% in this year, which is above the growth rate during the last five years that remained at 3%. The building of more roads and rails to achieve economic growth engage the engineers more in the nation building.
Engineering as a profession provides a bigger room for creativity and innovation. For instance, program such as design, innovation and creative engineering equip students with exceptional interdisciplinary skills which are vital in solving design problems. This program provides engineers with practical design skills which can easy and directly be applicable on a daily basis. The design development knowledge is essential for developing a winning innovative product into the market. The ability to innovate new products with a competitive edge in the economy makes the students majoring in engineering serve the country in terms of creating more jobs. For instance, the engineering students in the American University of Sharjah built a dome with a capacity to withstand 150 times its weight.
There is an increasing reliance on technology in the current society to improve the living standard; this demands a more training in the technological skills in the human force. Thus, the demand for engineers and technology experts will always be on the rise. The government consequently is focusing more in science and technology by encouraging both the public and private institutions to introduce such courses. Thus, there is a deficiency in skills in science and technology that calls for more individuals to be trained and serve the country in the capacity of engineers. In the Higher Colleges of Technology, a partnership with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to meet the high constant demand for highly graduates as well as to boost the number of engineering student indicate that the intake of students into colleges does not meet the market demand.
The other avenues where the engineering majors serve the country are in the extraction, storage, distribution, purification and water treatment areas. Water is a very imperative resource for human existence on earth. Engineering enhances the extraction and conservation of this rare resource. Through engineers’ knowledge, water can efficiently and effectively be managed in the United Arab Emirates big cities. Engineers that are specialized in the civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental engineering have significantly contributed positive toward the conservation and preservation of water in our country.
Furthermore, it is only through investing in engineering that a country on the face of the earth can tackle the challenges of energy sustainability. Reliable energy is crucial for the today’s use as well as for future generations. The engineers participate in serving the country by finding a solution to the challenges that are currently a threat to our energy sources. Through engineering knowledge, alternative sources of energy had been invented and continue to be discovered. The various ways that had been devised to deal with the shortage of the energy supply has been advanced by the personnel equipped with engineering skills. For example, the mechanical engineers in the United Arab Emirates had been useful in providing services in the maintenance of machines and equipments used the oil mining. Modern information has also been advanced by the knowledge in the engineering field. Engineers all over the world who specialize in the information technology have totally revolutionized the way we communicate.
All the major disciplines are equally important in that each one of them plays great and imperative roles in the development of our country. The business field is also important as it facilitates trade with other nations that in turn contribute to the earnings of the country. The Engineering major is important as it helps the country to advance in its sectors of the economy as this leads to national development. The two majors are inseparable since they all play crucial roles in our nation development. My recommendation is that all the majors should be taken seriously since an individual that is not good in engineering may turn out to be good in business.
