Our lives no doubt are fast becoming dependent on technology , so much so that we have been described in some quarters as the instant generation where everything seem to be just a click away. As we all engage in office jobs powered by the technological advancements we have made, the more we need energy to drive our machines and the urban population’s demand for food increasing by the day. Whereas technology has no doubt made things easier, we have become so detached from nature that we don’t seem to care what we are doing to our environment. We once treasured nature and enjoyed its fruit, but nowadays we just want to enjoy her fruits.
We lay fiber optic cables all over including under the sea not to mention the radio masts and equipment that we are always putting up in our neighborhoods just to satisfy the need for connectivity to facilitate businesses and communication. Our reasoning is, “we need to make the world a global village”. We don’t care whether we disturb the marine ecosystem, introduce harmful radio waves in the environment or clear trees for better line of sites as long as we can sustain our communication technology and keep it growing.
We need to keep growing and advancing, but we also need to keep a proper balance in the ecosystem if only for our own survival. Nobel peace prize winner and environmental champion, the late Prof. Wangari Maathai once said that Mother Nature can be very unforgiving. Our greed and selfishness have us behaving as if humans are the most important species on the planet whereas we are just a cog in a properly balanced ecosystem and as dependent on nature as any other creature on land, under the sea and in the air.
A well preserved environment will put healthy food on our tables, give us clean air to breath and even give us the energy to continue advancing in communication technology and other areas of our lives. Companies, governments and indeed all of us need to rethink our negligence of the environment and come up with clear policies to ensure a sustainable ecosystem.
