Is There Connection Between Poverty and National Parks?
For many years the scientists have been involved in the debates about the connection between poverty and the creation of national parks in the area. Those scientists who believe that there is a strong connection between the raise of poverty and creation of protected natural areas say that such situation prevents agricultural development and leads to natural resources depletion. At the same time, their opponents think that national parks increase the revenue from tourism and facilitate employment.
Recent research has proved that creation of national parks in the area promotes eradication of poverty. Most of the countries are developing ones and their economic progress is characterized as slow, moreover, some peoples were initially impoverished. In this case, creation of national parks has led to poverty decrease up to 30 per cent in some regions (Andam et al.).
The communities that live near protected zones have several benefits that may eradicate poverty, e.g. development of tourism business that will attract new profit, investments in physical and human resource capital, protection of the ecosystem (Eoearth.org). It is possible to talk about not only about the lack of harm to local people from the creation of national parks, moreover, it is a great opportunity not only for the particular country or area to attract tourists and being employed but it is a great deal for the whole world as nature is our common treasure. Thousands of species and unique environments may be saved with the creation of national parks.
