This paper discusses the epistemology of two of the essays I have written for this course. I am focusing on project 2 and project 3. These essays were on the topics of television viewing in childhood and the causes and effects of same-sex marriage. To write both of these papers, I used my own experiences and opinions, as well as my own research. I also used background information that I have learned from reading news stories and watching news programs. All of these things helped me to form my opinions of the issues discussed and caused me to form my arguments for or against the issues.
In Project 2 I discussed the causes and possible outcomes of same-sex marriage. The cause of same-sex marriage is homosexuality, so I discussed possible causes of that lifestyle. I don’t have any experience with homosexual people so I used my own opinions and the opinions of my family and friends to come to my conclusions.
One of my arguments about homosexual causes is that people learn it from society or their family, or even both. Since I was raised in a mother and father parent family, I became heterosexual just like my parents. That is why I feel that a family that has homosexual parents would result in a homosexual child, because the child learns it from their parents just as I learned to be heterosexual from my parents.
When a child is raised in a community or society where there are homosexuals then they don’t see any deviance in being homosexual, so they are more likely to become homosexual. Again this belief comes from my own experiences, since I was not exposed to any homosexuals I never learned that it was right. Therefore I think it is wrong and am heterosexual.
In project 2 I pointed out several effects of same-sex marriage. Many of these outcomes I came to from my own logic. Since same-sex marriage is a new issue there is not a lot of evidence about the effects of widespread homosexual marriage.
Since same-sex marriage cannot result in a child unless adopted, I argued that birth rates would drop as a result. From my upbringing I believe that the point of marriage is to create children. That is why same-sex marriage is a problem, because they cannot result in children.
I also showed that there would be more adultery because I learned from my research that homosexual men have about 8 partners a year even when they are in a relationship. So if they get married they will still have relations with other men outside of their marriage and this will lead to more HIV and AIDS. Again this opinion came from my research and my own opinions.
Project 3 discussed the issue of children watching television. I think that television watching can be good for educational purposes if the children do not watch too much. Parents should be careful about what they let their kids watch on television. My own parents were very strict in allowing me to watch television as a child, and I agree with their belief that children should not watch too much television.
One argument I have against allowing children to watch too much television is that it can lead to laziness and even obesity. Children often eat junk food while watching television, and if they are spending their time watching television and not being active they will gain a lot of weight. I feel this way because I have seen children who are lazy and obese from watching a lot of television. Also there are a lot of news reports about the high amount of obesity in children. That is why I feel that children should not be allowed to watch too much television.
I believe that the type of program a child watches has an impact on their behavior. In Project 3 I discussed that children who watch violent programs will become aggressive, and if they watch scary programs they will become fearful in their own lives and worry a lot. I did some internet research on this and read on some websites that aggressive behavior in children can come from the kinds of television programs they watch. I also used to have a childhhod friend who was very aggressive and he enjoyed watching those types of programs.
I also used some information from the American Association of Pediatrics to form my opinion about children watching television. They did a study that said children under the age of two should not watch television, and if they are older than that the parents should monitor what they watch.
Both of the essays I discussed in this paper were written off of my own opinions and experiences. In my life I have learned about the topics through watching news reports and reading newspapers. Also I learned things from my parents and family as well as friends and teachers. I did some research for these papers but I had already formed my opinions on these topics from my own life experiences.
