Ergonomics refers to the process of changing the job making it easier for the workers. It enables the matching of equipment, work methods, and tools with the workers. The ergonomic application should be practiced in a way that it benefits, workers through the betterment of work procedures and task designs. Adding the consciousness of personnel to the importance of implementing ergonomics paves the way for both the employees and the management to work together and acquire primary benefits for the employees’ health. Many researchers have discovered that ergonomics is more efficient when the employees and the management work hand in hand to modify the job tasks, including tools, methods, environment, and equipment. The initial step in making ergonomics successful is by enlightening the employees with knowledge about ergonomics and ways in which it can support their careers to their abilities. This paper will address the benefits of Ergonomics training and how the program can be applied in a workstation.
Ergonomic injuries are musculoskeletal injuries which are severe and expensive to treat. These injuries affect many workers every year that results to absenteeism from work due to treatment. These injuries can be prevented when ergonomics is incorporated into job training. The benefits that come with ergonomics training have been proved to outweigh its cost of implementation.
The primary reason of executing ergonomics is to reduce the risk of injuries among the employees, and in turn, reduces the costs related to it . In the state of California, 52,925 suffer from musculoskeletal injuries that are fatal enough to disable them from carrying out their duties for at least one a day. Among the 52,925 workers, 60% had to be away for at least a week, and the other 27% had to be absent from work for more than a month. This costs the state a loss of 4.5 billion dollars.
The advantages of ergonomics training can also be seen via the savings related to reduced morale, low employee turnover, and absenteeism. When the training program is put in place, the workers will appreciate the efforts of the management to improve their working conditions hence increased morale and high productivity. In return, the workers will improve their performance and stay in the company. This is considered as the primary factor that determines the staff retention that also saves an organization’s cost related to the training and hiring of new employees.
A summary of the implementation process of ergonomics includes; Provide management support, involve the employees, provide training, identify problems, encourage early reporting, implement solutions to hazards, and evaluate progress. The ergonomics process is based on safety and health principle to address occupational health risks. The program should be taken as a continuous function that is integrated into the daily routine of a workplace and not as a discrete project.
Ergonomics training is an important piece of a working environment puzzle. A well-trained and adequately equipped workforce makes a significant difference in a company’s productivity. The maximum employee performance is attained at the intersection of a fit, healthy workforce and a good workplace design. The recognition of workplace opportunities and the implementations of the perfect solutions start with the training.
The paybacks of ergonomic programs do benefit not only the employees but also the employers. It not only protects employees from injuries that are work related but it also protects employers from costs that are injury related. With the working environment in consideration, there are various ways in which ergonomics ideologies can be practiced to improve working conditions. With the different information and tools provided, achieving effective ergonomics programs can be nothing less a success.
