In the film Hotel Rwanda, the main acting technique used was the Stanislavski's Method of acting. In this kind of acting technique, the primary concept surrounding acting is the idea of emotional recall, whereby the actor focuses internally to bring out the real character’s emotions on the stage. It is a progression of techniques that are in common use while training the cast to attach much of emotions to their stage performances. Although this method regarded as one of the oldest acting techniques, it is still among the most popular techniques used in the movie industry, with a lot of movies employing it while acting.
The actor, under Stanislavski's Method, should try as much as possible to approach a role as it is and then assess its feasibility. In the film Hotel Rwanda, the main actor, Paul, tries as much as possible to attach the emotions to the play. This is evidenced when he could not sit back and watch his neighbors being murdered in the genocide. Due to his emotional concern, Paul goes to the extent of bribing the people of influence an attempt of keeping his family safe from attack. At some point, when the Rwandan Army Officer threatens him and his neighbors, he negotiates not only his safety, but also for his neighbors. Paul uses his connections with the prominent leaders and the security officers to bring his family, neighbors and refugees to his hotel.
When Stanislavski's Method has been used, the action strives to answer three central questions as a character. The question would be; what should I do? Then why do I need to do it? And finally, how should I do what am supposed to do? Upon answering these three questions, the actor is good to go since this are the main aims and ideas behind scripting of the play. In the Hotel Rwanda, the characters like Paul and Tatiana used their skills very well to address these questions. To address the first question of Stanislavski's method, Don Cheadle, as Paul perfectly identifies himself with the suffering Tusti side as a way of getting emotions into the play. Thereafter, he goes ahead to save them by bringing them into his hotel, irrespective of how much he pays. His action at this point portrays him as a heartless young man who couldn’t get deterred easily. As much as he is well aware of the consequences of hosting the Tutsis, Paul didn’t lose hope on these innocent people. He is a representation of humanity that is worth emulating. At this point, Don Cheadle successfully manages to pass a number of themes and lessons to the target audience through his proper integration into the character’s role.
The primary aim of Stanislavski when he came up with such a method of acting was to come up with a best way of getting the actor sufficiently interested in the action. This would help reduce the cases of crippling by the audience. If the actors intensively scrutinized the object, a strong desire towards the play would develop. The use of Stanislavski's Method would consequently intensify the development of the action, a case with the Hotel Rwanda. The chief actors and actresses like Don Cheadle and Sophie Okonedo got interested in the acting of the clip possibly because of the central theme of the movie that was the promotion of peaceful coexistence. Playing the role of Paul and Tatiana, Don and Sophie respectively got motivated by the fact that their characterization in the play would earn them a lot of reputation and fame in the world. At the same time, their roles as main characters would help a lot in the creation of awareness on the need for peace.
