Business Management as my Major in College
A solid theoretical background on business management enables an individual to better cope with challenges in his/her company. This belief is my motivation in choosing business management as my major in college. I was exposed to business since I was a young child. There are members of my family who operate their own companies. I have observed my father and also my uncle when they did their jobs in their companies. I was very interested in what they were doing and I thought then that when I grow up, I will also have my own company. When it was time to choose a major, I listened to the advice of my father and uncle. My teacher also helped me understand the benefits and requirements of this major in college. After talking with them many times, I finally decided that business management is the best option for me. I am interested in it, I was exposed to it early in life, and I was willing to work hard to get the degree.
A major in business management will inform me about the basics in business. I will learn about the history of different courses, the theories behind particular concepts, and the people who have contributed to the development of business methods. I will learn about the best practices. There will be case studies of real-life situations from which my classmates and I can learn from. There shall also be projects which will develop my skills in analysis and make me a better team player. I am sure that I will learn not only from the inputs of my professors but also from the insights of my classmates
A major in business management will develop my practical and intellectual skills. These skills would be very useful when I work in my own company or in another person’s company. The skills I would acquire, be it analysis, research, finance, teamwork, decision-making, leadership, resource management, evaluation, or marketing; all these are applicable to a wide range of occupations. Thus, when I get the degree there is an assurance that there would be a lot of options for a job. I can work as a marketing executive, a financial analyst, a human resource manager, a bookkeeper, accounts executive, business secretary, and even a chief executive officer.
Gains from a business management major
This major will help me strengthen existing networks and build new ones. As part of a family with business operations, I am aware of that it is important to maintain networks. I have met many of my father and uncle’s business associates. Taking care of the relationship helps the companies transact business better. There is also the importance given to trust, mutual respect, and excellence. In the classroom, we would be learning about the best practices of small and large companies. We will knowing which strategies will work and which would not. And the class would definitely be discussing how to address problems organizations face and which solutions are most likely to succeed. All these academic discussions will strengthen me as a student and as a person. With the skills and the knowledge from the major, I would be able to strengthen existing networks and build new partnerships.
Conclusion
A business management major provides the theoretical background and practical skills that are important whether one forms his/her own company or become employed in other organizations. The decision to choose this major was influence by persons from my family who have first-hand knowledge about business operations. The sessions in the classroom will enable me to learn from the experiences of existing business companies. These will also give me a solid theoretical background about the field I have decided to join. From these theories and best practices, I am confident that I will be better equipped to deal with business challenges that are waiting for me in the future.
