The story of Agamemnon and the House of Atreus is really a tragedy because it is composed of ill-fated characters, obsessions, pride, rape, adultery and other negative social issues that are not ideal in a society. The story focused on grossed conduct of the characters because they are self-centered. More so, the main force or people involved in these tragic events are persons that members of the family.
For the case of Agamemnon, for example, he met his death because of being murdered and the reason for the murder is because of adultery by his wife. However, feud between him and his brother also occurred because of an affair he have with Helen, his own father’s wife. The story also sets extreme characteristics of humans, like killing a son and letting the father eat his own son.
Although there are several versions on the story of the House of Atreus, there have the same concepts, making it one of the successful Greek tragedies. So what makes the story a great tragedy? The story teaches a lesson in life and hopes that after telling or watching the story, something in the persons behavior will change. The story wants to teach the viewer’s ethical values by showing the deeds of the person and the possible consequences it may befall him. Through this, the viewers would start thinking twice before doing the same thing.
It shows how heroes or gods or kings and other powerful people that they can experience downfall with the aid of some hubris, fate or divine interference. The viewers of a tragedy are forced to see how a mighty hero can fall down and while slowly falling down, he usually sees his mistakes or reasons why he is experiencing such. Although, heroes of such story need not die, sometimes, they just have a change of fortune.
In the case of Agamemnon, he died in his own home by his wife or his wife’s brother. This fate could have befallen him and is just right for him because he cheated on his own brother and his wife. For the part of his wife, she may have looked for revenge for what Agamemnon is doing to her.
