Regulation of Veterinary Biologics (Question 2)
Animal feeds will be one of the most difficult veterinary biologics that can be regulated. The primary reason for this is because animal feeds are the primary source of food for some animals, including those that are being consumed by humans. Regulation agencies must make sure that these products contain minimum or proper amounts of harmful chemical to avoid development of pathogens which might cause illnesses. In addition to this, people have different perspectives about technology-modified products (Hoban, 2004) and this adds further to the difficulty of regulating the products in terms of consumer preferences. Even though there are certified processes which keep the safety and quality of products (Food and Drug Administration, 2004), people, especially the ones who are unfamiliar to the processes, will still find it difficult to accept the products. As a result, regulation agencies find it difficult to make decisions because they also comply with people’s choice of products.
Bt Corn (Question 3)
Since Bt is a kind of pesticide, FDA should be the ones responsible for regulating the production of Bt-Corn. Though Bt maintains the health, nutrient, and quality of corns, Bt contains chemicals which are potentially harmful to human body. This only implies that the welfare of the consumers should be more prioritized than the damage that will be done by the pests to the plants. However, it does not mean that the production of Bt-Corn will be stopped. Instead, FDA should carefully examine the product, and see if there are potentially harmful substances contained in the genetically modified product. Once the product has passed FDA standards, it will be ready for consumption and for market sale (Lederman, 2004). Genetically Modified Products such as the Bt-Corn are made to include nutrients which are not originally present in the product. Therefore, these products can be distributed to places where cases of malnutrition are severe.
