Essay On An Argument For Getting Married Later In Life

All cultures have a varying way that governs how a man and a woman are able to enter into a bond that leads to children. Marriage though, is a fluid concept that is not the same in every place or even any time. Examine why marriage exist and then discussing how it exist in our current time can lead us to weigh the pros and cons of getting married younger or older.
In older times marriage had to do with property. Women were thought of as possessions in much the same way one would think of owning a goat or a cow. In some cultures men were able to have more than one wife. There are cultures where this is still observed. The Mormons for instance, while the practice is outlawed today used to practice polygamy, which means getting married to more than one woman. Though the main religion does not observe this today, there are extreme sects in some places, often remote and often ranches, where this is still practiced.
There are also places in Africa where polygamy is accepted in a culture. In more modern times than when a wife was thought of as a man’s property, wives were seen as servants and the children they produced gave an economic advantage to the man because they produced children that could then work the fields and produce.
In our modern times marriage, at least ideally and within our laws, is viewed as an equal partnership between a man in the woman who love each other and through their own free will have decided to create a permanent unity between them.
One argument for why a person should not get married young is that they are not old enough or wise enough to really be able to make a mature choice that will have effects on their entire life.
An argument against getting married young is that it gives you time to achieve your potential and chase your dreams. It is not that you cannot do that within a marriage but that a person’s focus changes when they have a wife, and certainly changes when they have kids. Getting married young would likely lead to having children earlier.
When a person is young, say twenty-five, there is a difference of options between the twenty-five year old who is unmarried and the one who is married with kids. In the case of the one who is married with kids, his focus must be, or at least should be on his family. He has people that he is responsible for feeding and clothing. On the other hand a twenty-five-year-old who is not shouldering these burdens is able to freely travel and to take career risks that he might otherwise not have done if he had to remain in work constantly.
People who get the opportunity to travel and see the world have also the opportunity to grow their knowledge base. Thought it is not impossible to travel with children, it certainly is not easy. Taking risks is important. It is through risks that a person can better their odds. Is it crazing to sell everything you own and travel by bus across the world? It would be crazy if a person were doing that and neglecting their parental responsibilities, but not so crazy for a person who was free and young and able to do whatever their whims led them to do.
That is why in my perspective it is better for a person to wait. It does not mean that a person needs to wait, since marriage is a very individual decision that people must decide for themselves, but I think that given the options it can allow someone to make a mature decision instead of one committed to during a person’s youth.
