A painting or a canvas is not just a picture drawn to attract people towards it or for the fun of a painter. A painting depicts lot more than just colors or the shape of the object drawn. It shows the thought process of a painter, the feelings and emotions of the subject that is being drawn, the place or situation the subject is in, and a lot more. The basic idea behind studying a painting is to be able to understand what forced the painter to paint that particular picture and the message the painter wants to convey with that picture.
When one looks at the museum filled with Andy Warhol’s paintings, they are bound to be fascinated with the variety he is able to present as a painter. Each painting that is displayed here, though fascinating and of course, has an array of colors, need to be studied carefully to understand the in-depth meaning of the subject or the painter himself. The subjects of his painting are most famous personalities, and their similarities drawn by Andy Warhol are astounding.
Andy Warhol has excelled himself in this portrait ‘Sitting Bull’. The subject in this picture is a tribal chief, a fact depicted by Warhol in the amount of color he has used to draw the picture. The face and his hands are painted blue in color and not the usual beige color to show the skin. Warhol might have wanted to portray the darkness in the skin color of the rebel, while drawing the painting. A black or a brown color would not have been appropriate and might have hidden the expression in the face of the subject.
Another aspect that is shown in the facial expression is the ‘emotions’ of the subject portrayed. In spite of the serious business he was involved in, the rebel was shown to be in a good humor in this picture. There is a hint of a smile in his face and worldliness in his eyes. Then again, when you look at it carefully, you also tend to feel that the subject is trying to indulge anyone who is drawing his picture or talking to him and while doing so, he is not very happy about sitting in one place and doing nothing.
Predictions such as the one I have formed might not be completely true. One never knows what the painter was thinking when he was drawing the picture. But, one certain fact about this picture is that the clothing, the plumed feather on the head, a stick again, with its paraphernalia, all show clearly where this particular person belongs to.
If I do not know that he is a tribal warrior, I might mistake the subject for a witch, because of the ‘smug’ kind of expression or the stick he is holding. May be I should make it a wizard, but then, the picture, when seen by a person who do not know the identity of the subject, might look like that of an old lady.
The painter has also left a lot of empty space around the picture. The canvas is made on a white background, highlighting the ‘sitting bull’ alone. This way, one will not be distracted by the landscape or any such thing shown as a background.
