After reading the book of Kelly, Parameswaran and Schniedewind “Women: Images and Realities, a Multicultural Anthology”, particularly the Chapter “Becoming a Woman in Our Society”, many of your stereotypes are affected as well as you start understanding what the women’s state of affairs in the modern society is. The mentioned chapter consists of many stories, told by different women. In this short paper I will try to deal with those, which were the most powerful and logical.
One of the women expressed the idea that gender is not merely a biological sex, but also a social role we play, namely this is combination of these two factors [Kelly, Parameswaran and Schiedewind 113]. And the attitude towards you usually depends on how you express yourself, for instance which styles of dress we choose, how we show emotions and which hobbies we have [Kelly, Parameswaran and Schiedewind 113]. The author was once amazed that her decision not to change her name was characterized as courage, even though this is the least she could have done as an equal with a man social unity. Thus, she decided to insist on using towards her masculine pronouns as well as calling her Barb [Kelly, Parameswaran and Schiedewind 112]. She ended up the story with a conclusion that such behavior was accepted normally.
The other expression of sexism could be found in media. In one of the stories the following example is given: the 18-year old was raped by a gang, consequently, such statement as “the victim wore inappropriate clothing and was known to hang out with older boys” in the New York Times column was made [Kelly, Parameswaran and Schiedewind 101]. Other examples from media relate to the issues of impossibility of women to become rich on their own, disability to be a businesswoman and so on.
Hence, I suppose that the situation occurred demonstrates how many people live in a fake reality, in which they suppose that women are to follow the classic German three K principle, paying attention to kitchen, church and children. However, it does not reflect the reality, in which lots of women are braver, than men, as well as a number of women have succeeded in achieving great results in different social fields.
