There are people in a positive or negative way both in one’s personal and professional life. For me working in retail has been an eye opener in view of the challenges that the job brings and its influence in daily life. My Supervisor Steve had been a great positive influence in terms of work ethics which has helped a great deal in doing chores at work and also at home in an effective and efficient manner.
Steve taught me the importance of being planned in the retail work environment in view of the dynamic environment of retail. As a part of the customer service team and working on the shop floor, the importance of communication with the customers, being flexible during high traffic in the store were taught by Steve as significant element of my job. The most important managerial facet which I learnt was the ability to handle pressure and still be able to fulfill job obligations effectively. It is of paramount importance that the managers are confident as the team when in strife looks up to a father figure as in our stores case Steve had the aura of a friend, father figure and a disciplinarian at the same time.
Being a good listener is also one trait which I learnt from Steve as not only it helps in a retail environment a great deal in dealing with the customers and also team members. As stated by Nic Peeling in his book’s introduction Brilliant Manager (2010), Steve had all the brilliant qualities mentioned most importantly Leadership and Organizational ability. Lastly the best managerial quality that Steve had was to perform the tasks he expected his team members to perform which were tough or time consuming.
On a concluding note a manager should be able to handle not only the tasks that are required but also treat the team with dignity and earn their trust and respect.
