When it comes to undergraduate students, finding a right major is not an easy task. Most of them need more time to figure out what major will be better for them. Indeed, some students tend to choose a major that interests them more than other majors, but right after graduation they realize it wasn’t a right choice. Therefore, students pursue undergraduate degree in one field and then graduate degree in another one. However, some students are luckier, because they chose a right major from the very beginning. Such students still need to gain some extra knowledge and skills that could help them be more successful, so they decide to choose another major and go to the graduate school that specializes in a different area. For example, Victoria is a new student at Claremont graduate university; her undergrad is Fine Arts. Even though Victoria is fond of her undergraduate major, she is taking on the challenge of switching to Business Art in order to have better chances for success in the future; this change is very hard for her because she does not have enough knowledge about business. Although switching major to Business Art will require much more effort and much more time spent studying the subjects she is not familiar with, Victoria should pursue this step because as a result she will get an opportunity to obtain the knowledge and master the skills in the subjects that are demanded by the employers nowadays and thus she will increase her employment opportunities and improve her career prospects.
Changing major to Business Art will not be easy for Victoria and she may have to struggle with most of her business classes since business major is one of the most difficult fields, especially for those students who didn’t take any business courses before. However, if Victoria combines business and art knowledge, she will be able to reach her goal and become successful in her future career; combining the knowledge in business and art can increase her opportunity to achieve her career goals. For example, one of the specializations she can take in Business Art includes a marketing course that can improve her ability to evaluate artworks. Also, she will be able to understand the differences between different art markets, how to sell artworks in different galleries, art fairs and exhibitions. Another specialization Victoria can take in Business Art is international business; combined with the knowledge she has in Fine Arts, this specialization will give Victoria an opportunity to better understand the international processes and markets, to expand her operations overseas and maybe even to pursue a career abroad. These reasons make this student more interested in choosing Business Art major.
Another option Victoria has is to stay with her Fine Arts major; if she does that she also has chances to be successful. She spent years studying Fine Arts, so she has a strong background in this major now. Victoria can reinforce her skills in Fine Arts by obtaining a Master’s degree in this major. Studying will be easier for her, and she will be able to focus on improving and extending her skills in Art. She could even narrow down her specialization and become a very good expert in some particular area of Fine Art. In case she is lucky enough and that specialization is demanded on the job market, she can find a well-paid job and even become popular due to her knowledgeable consultations.
Thus, Victoria has two options: to switch her major to Business Art that will require much more effort because she does not have any knowledge of the business subjects that are rather difficult, but at the same time it will give her more chances to be successful in the future and to improve her career prospects; or she can stay with her Fine Arts major and improve her skills in this subject which also does not mean that she cannot be successful in the future. It is up to Victoria to decide which option suits her better, but due to the current situation in the world that is constantly changing, globalization, integration of various fields and expansion of business, it is better not to put all eggs in one basket and to obtain knowledge and skills in different areas. For those reasons it can be recommended to Victoria to make a decision to switch her major to Business Arts; it will be very difficult at the beginning but it will open to her the opportunities she will never have if she chooses to stay with her current major. She will have to work hard for two or three years but after that all the efforts she made and time she spent studying the new subjects will pay off when she finds an excellent job and starts to make a successful career.
