Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish designer, architect and an artist born on 7th June 1868 as the fourth born in a family of 11 youngsters and second child of William McIntosh and his wife, Margaret Rennie. Mackintosh spent his childhood at the Townhead and Dennistoun regions of Glasgow, and he went to Reid's Public School and the Allan Glen's Institution. In 1890, Mackintosh was the second champ of the Alexander Thomson Traveling Studentship awards, set up for the assistance of the study of great old architecture, with unique locus to the standards represented in Mr. Thomson's workings. He officially altered the spelling of his name from McIntosh to Mackintosh, although no specific explanation is provided on why he decided to do so.
Macintosh designs were greatly influenced by his modernist ideas and Asian arts, learnt from interactions with the Japanese people leading to the rise of Japonisme style of art. The main reason for Macintosh's obsession with the Japanese style is its limitation and reduction of means as opposed to showy aggregation. Another reason was its straightforward structures and characteristic materials instead of elaboration and stratagem; the utilization of texture, light and shadow as opposed to decoration and adornment. Macintosh designs were also influenced by the rising modernist ideas in Europe, exposing his like for innovation and new technology, unlike others who were more concerned with history.
Macintosh developed a style of his, which was a complexity between solid right edges and botanical motivated enhancing themes with inconspicuous bends, a design indicated in the Mackintosh Rose theme. Some of his projects include the Hill House, which he designed on a hill where it was visible from all sides. In designing the interiors of the house, Macintosh placed the main living rooms on the ground floor. The main bedrooms are situated directly above the living rooms on the first floor. Macintosh design of the colors and furniture in the lounge and the bedrooms is intricate but simple, with the living room’s furniture, ceiling and part of the walls painted black. In the principal bedroom, he uses violet color, black furniture and wardrobes decorated with unexpected curves.
Another building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh is the Glasgow Herald Building, which includes a large number of his commonplace outline inclinations in its outside. The main importance of the design is the originality as it was not seen anywhere else and not many designers were adventurous enough to try new motives in designing buildings.
Mackintosh also designed the medical hall at Queen Margaret College. The Medical School was initially based at North Park House, close Botanic Gardens, which had turned into Scotland's first school for ladies in 1884 and some portion of Glasgow University in 1892. A proposition to give restorative courses to female understudies had been made by a few ladies in 1889 with the money related sponsorship of Mrs. Isabella Elder. The main characteristic of the design are the long lines, some spiraling which are neither parallel nor intersects at right angles.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh had presented his plans for the building of Glasgow School of Art in 1896 and was the triumphant contestant when the outcome was reported in mid-1897. Financial restraints implied that the building was raised in stages somewhere around 1897 and 1909. Glasgow School of Art still shows a freshness of style and introduces an entrancing understanding into turn of the century innovation.
