Introduction
Today there are very many engineering professions. Different people have different reasons why they prefer a given engineering profession of another. Some of the big five engineering occupation includes mechanical, industrial, electrical, civil, and chemical engineering. My choice is the civil engineering. In the recent past, civil engineering has grown to be the third largest engineering field. This has been shown by the number of working engineers and graduates every year. Apart from being the oldest branch of engineering, civil engineering has advanced to be one of the most important occupations in the engineering world today. In this paper I will explore the reasons why I love civil engineering and provide its functions (Narayanan 123).
You will agree with me that modern life is today almost exclusively dependent on engineering. Civil engineering is everywhere today and dynamically changing. It is this in particular reason that attracts me to civil engineering. Apart from the field been able to combine my skills and knowledge for physics and mathematics, it also allows me to work in diverse and exciting. The second reason why I love civil engineering is because I am fascinated by the prospect of the career. I am a civil engineer and I must say my job has enabled me to shape the world the future while making people’s lives difference (Narayanan 136). Whilst I expect a demanding and challenging demanding career, I also anticipate for a very rewarding, particularly when I can see some of the projects I have toiled on being built to completion.
My first encounter in the field of civil engineering was during my experience with local engineering firm in September 2004. Apart from the fact that I was enthused by the opportunity of putting my existing knowledge to real-life problems, I was also able to work with qualified engineers on a railway embankment stabilization project. This was one project that made me love civil engineering. During this project, I relished my chance of becoming wholly involved in a real engineering problem. I was also able to experience report writing and project management enabling me to gain vital team-working and producing a report that received positive comments from the senior engineers (Narayanan 142).
Civil Engineering Job Function
Civil engineering has many functions that mainly rotate around creating, protecting, and improving the environs in which we live. Civil engineers are responsible for the planning, superintending, and designing maintenance and construction of building facilities and structures. Some of the structures and facilities that civil engineers maintain and construct include roads, dams, railways, power plants, sewage and water system among many others. They are responsible for the building and designing of large structures and building of tall houses that can last for many years withstanding all types of weather conditions. Civil engineers decide to either be a contracting engineer responsible for turning of plans into actuality and maintaining built structures, or consulting engineers who design and advice on projects (Charles 112).
Conclusion
This paper has exclusively explored civil engineering, which was my, interest field of engineering. First the paper has provided several reasons why I am only interested in civil engineering. I have given an example in the railway embankment project that I was involved in. The paper has as well proved why civil engineering is one of the primary branches of engineering. Apart from been one of the oldest branches of engineering, it is very much a key discipline. This is because civil engineering job often requires someone to work past their call of duty.
