The movie God Grew Tired of us highlight the journey which the lost boys undertook from their war torn country Sudan through Kenya to their destination in the United states of America. There are various aspects of cultural differences which were portrayed in the movie and they are as follows.
On the issue of distribution of roles. The Sudanese have a clear defined duty for both boys and girls’ according to their traditional cultural practice. A good example is when one of the boys in the Kakuma camp says that cooking meals is not one of the duties that a man should engage in it is a prerogative of the women. In the American culture this is not a major issue.
During the Christmas festivities one of the lost boys questions the relationship between the two symbols Santa Claus and Christmas tree. According to them there was no place in the bible where this was cited is not included in their culture. Their idea of Christmas celebrations was quite different it involved singing and dancing these activities helps the members of the community to overcome social exclusion.
On arrival to the United States the lost boys are fascinated by so many things particularly the lifestyles of the people of America, the kind of food they eat, their mode of dressing. According to them this was a luxury since back in their home they literally had nothing to wear and no food to eat. On the other hand the situation was not so merry because at one time the lost boys were prevented from moving in groups for security purposes. The lost boys were dissatisfied in the way the Americans conduct themselves. He criticized the way the Americans did not seem to care about the affairs of their neighbors’ this was evident in the way the neighbors’ did not show any form of concern towards them.
Three years down the road the younger of the lost boys have been absorbed by the American culture this is in the way they dress some have pierced their ears, plaited their hair and drive flashy cars.
Cultural exclusion is the process whereby an individual is excluded from the activities carried out by the community. Cultural inclusion on the other hand can be defined in the context of cultural exclusion in that all the individuals are represented in the activities of the community.
