Interoffice Memorandum of Ethics Department for ABC Company
Thanks for the cooperation you have shown both as a colleague and as a workmate. I appreciate the fact that it has not been easy because of the work load but I am glad despite of all that we have been working as a team in this company.
I am writing to you regarding your advisory request. I remember you informed me that you are working on a project that involves developing land that was purchased recently by our company to build an adult entertainment retail store. You also told me that the land is located on the corner of the neighbourhood where your brother lives. As you know the property value for the surrounding neighbourhood will decrease after the company announces the plan publicly. You also told me that he had received an offer to sell his house at a good price.
This is an ethical issue because in this situation you are required to choose between your brother who is your friend or the company where you earn a living from. Here you will use some theories for you to be wise enough. One of the theories is the Utilitarianism theory that is the doctrine which the useful is a good and that determines consideration of the right conduct. It is a theory which its aim of action must be the biggest possible balance of the pleasure over pain or a greatest happiness of a greatest number (Ford 5). You should also use another theory which is called the universal ethics. This is a set of the principles that apply to us human beings. They are a sort of the moral constitution that is articulated as the set of the specific ethical principals which are accepted to every individual (Ford 7). So you should be wise not to annoy your brother by using these two theories. If these two theories are used well there will be no negative effect even after your brother discovering that it is your company that bought that piece land.
Tell your bother that according to some research conducted recently, the land where his house is located is depreciating or the value of that land has decreased due to some reasons. One of the reasons being that there are some investors who have already bought the land near his house and there is a rumour going round that the business they want to invest in will cause harm to human beings. It is said that the investment will cause pollution in the community and it will not be conducive for living. There will be a lot of noise having in mind that your brother has children who are school going age.
Advise him to sell the house as he had thought because he was given good amount of money. Tell him there is a piece of land about twenty miles from his house the one I shown you. This land is very fertile because it is a virgin land and also very affordable. Take him there to see for himself. The land is also located near a hospital, a good school and also near the road. This land can be a good choice for a family man like your brother. Show him the importance of raising kids in a quiet place and free from pollution especially noise that can disrupt them from studies.
Educate him not only the noise but also the kids will be morally upright if they are raised in a good and conducive environment. If they are in a polluted place it will be very hard to discipline them especially regarding their morals. You should be wise when telling him this as you know after the plan is publicly announced it will be simple to explain to him why you advised him. Make sure you persuade him until he buys your idea and sells the land immediately when there is time as the plan will be made public in one month’s time. This will have a positive impact to him and also to his family.
As I conclude remember your brother is not part of our team in the company so advise him wisely knowing that it can affect your stay here in the company. Make sure you use the reasoning ethics steps and the two theories that I have stated correctly. If you follow every detail I have written here I am sure you will be successful. I will be gland working with you again in the future.
